Re: what kind of gear oil on a manual transmission (thiscivicuser)
ive heard 10w40 engine oil is great for honda trans

Re: what kind of gear oil on a manual transmission (kieran84)
regular 10w30 motor oil or honda MTF, use gear oil if you want to replace the transmission
|
i use 10w30 motor oil, works great
|
just stick to the manufacturer's recommendation (Honda MTF). It's not expensive and it's not like you're going to be buying it often.

Re: (NOFX)
Honda MTF is like 4 bucks a quart, 70w90 or wahtever at autozone is too thick

??^^ why would gear oil make the transmission break or go bad? I dont think you know what you are talking about. Almost every aftermarket LSD(ATS, Kaaz, Cusco, ect) requires you to use their own friction modified 80-90 gear oil. Most people that have these diffs run them hard on the race tracks and you dont see them blowing up trannys from using gear oil. WTF? |
Re: what kind of gear oil on a manual transmission (Crx Jimmy)
taken DIRECTLY from a crx fsm
"Use only SAE 10w-30 or 10w-40 oil rated SE or SF grade" i did read on a kaaz installation that you are supposed to use 80/90w gl-5 lsd oil, i think they are generalizing towards the rwd transmission applications that use this weight oil stock. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1875353 dont use heavy weight oil in a honda transaxle (.) |

Re: what kind of gear oil on a manual transmission (Crx Jimmy)
THE FACT IS honda mtf is not that expensive and it is the BEST choice for a stock non lsd tranny so quit being difficult and go buy some.

Yeah I did! they said they DO run gear oil in lsd tranny's https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emhammer.gif mista bone even dsaid to run syncormesh which is a gear oil https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emhammer.gif </TD></TR></TABLE> Synchromesh may be gear oil in the sense that it is used in transmissions. But it is NOT the same thing as the GL-4/GL-5 high viscosity gear oils (ie 85W90, 85W140, etc) that are used on old-school transmissions. These oils are WAYYYY too thick for Honda transmissions (and MANY other newer manual transmissions), and will not be able to penetrate into tight spaces to lubricate MANY of the bearings. SO stay away from the thick stuff. Remember that Honda's original recommendation for these cars is 10W30 or 10W40 motor oil. There was no Honda MTF at the time. Of course, Honda MTF is a GREAT lubricant, as is synchromesh. Both of these oils are low viscosity gear oils. As for using 80W90 oil with an LSD, from what I have seen MANY of these higher end oils are actually quite a bit lighter than your typical GL-4/GL-5 85W90. |
Re: what kind of gear oil on a manual transmission (StorminMatt)
i like to run 10w40 with some lucas
|
i've actually ruined a vx tranny from running gear oil in it.
