How do i depressurize the air conditioner compressor?

Is there a way to do this in my garage or do i need a mechanic, or is there a way that i don't even have to do this when i am taking the engine out of my car

yeah just rest it on the side without disconnecting after removing radiator and condenser from the car ... if you're swappign motors to different series. i.e. d series to b-series, then you'll have to swap a/c compressors ... in which case jsut uncrew the nut a few threads and RUN http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsmile.gif hahhaha ... well just let it all out, dont need a mechanic is what I mean.

if you are swapping motor series i would definitely suggest having a mechanic drain your AC setup the proper way. i think a jiffy lube would do it for you, i don't think they would charge you much. i would let a jiffy lube do this because it is hard to screw up something that is being taken out.

its a 10,000$ EPA fine if you get caught. but in your garage you wont get caught. just unscrew the cap from the ac system . the valve looks like a tire valve. push in the "tit" in the center and the refrigerant will escape. just like a tire

I've gotten a little headache just from the R-134 that escapes when I'm pushing a hose onto the fittings. I don't want to think about how I'd feel after discharging the whole system in my face.

depress it very slowly, just to where you hear refrigerant escape. if you dont want a headacke then buy a charging hose, dont put a can on it, and snap it on the low side valve and get out of the garage!

Funny you say that, because that is exactly what happen to my friends and I when we did mine. We didn't want to let it out slowly throught the valve thingy, so we just slowly unscrewed the bolt on the line to the compresser. We think we got it, its almost out and Bam! the line pop off and the Freon stuff goes up all in our faces. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsad.gif We ran to restroom and cleaned up, good thing we had protected eye gear on. I dont want to know what that would have done. Well i know for next time to just use the valve thing and play it on the safe side. I accidentally breathed in and sprayed R-134 and side effect included dry mouth, swollen throat, and loss of feeling on my hand. Be careful http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emcrook.gif .

r-134a is not flammable. also, why did they charge someone 10$ to recover the refrigerant?? They resell that shit to someone else for 10$ a pound dont you know. why should you pay them to recover it?? just screw the charging hose on the low side valve and getout of the garage. R-134a causes testicular cancer so dont breathe it!!
