98 civic need to reset the computer
 

have a 98 ex and i just swapped in another d16y8 and was told i need to reset the computer before i smog it. They also told me to reset it i need to do simple driving tasks like go from 0-40 quickly and then slowly go to 60 and then stop....... things of that nature anyway it all sounded pretty weird to me any idEAS?

Unlpug the ECU, or you can take the ground off the battery for 10-15 min.

I've heard of situations where the ECU will read "not ready" or something to that effect. Basically, you just want to drive the car a decent amount before taking it in for testing.

In OBD2 land, when you clear a the computer like that, you clear all the "readiness tests". These are things that the emission testing people look at before testing. If the computer shows them as incomplete, they won't do the emission test. Certian test are stuff like Cataletic performance, Evap leak test, O2 sensor proper operation, and so on. The computer needs to retest all this before you take the car in for emission testing. Some of these tests need you to drive at certian speeds for so long, so much time between engine shut off and start up, things like that.

There's something called I/M monitors.

Think the '96-'00 has about 6 or 7.

They're stuff like monitoring catalyst efficiency, O2 sensor readiness, stuff like that.

If you reset the ECU all of that shit "resets" - and takes some mileage & driving to "learn" the data back again.

If you unplug your battery right b4 u go to the inspection station then they'll read all your I/M monitors as not ready and it'll be pretty obvious as to why. They don't take that long to reset - but you have to ask yourself if the CEL will come back on in that time frame.

It's usually anywhere from 20-80 miles, but I've seen 'em take as long as 200 miles for all to ready again.

EDIT:
What they told you was right, there's a whole list of "ways to drive" so your I/M monitors ready faster...but regular driving will ready then eventually too.
