91 HONDA ACCORD HIGH IDLE
 

Hey all, good to be here...Anyways, i bought a 91 Honda Accord EX model, i have replaced and cleaned the IACV ( 3 of them thinkin i was getting bad ones), i have replaced the computer as i was getting a code of solid 1's which did not make any sense.

I get no check engine light, what i do get is after car is warmed up it idles at 1500 rpm and is hard to stop the car and the brake pedal goes spongy , it literally pulls away when i left off the brake with no accelerator pedal in use.

If i move the shifter into neutral the idle jumps to 2000 rpm and then drops "normally" into 1000 rpm and runs and drives fine.

What in the world is causing this ? Is it the TPS ? Coolant temp sensor ??

well you said that you cleaned the iacv but what about the fiv did you check that out?

Hey bro , what is the fiv ? I am not a ton knowledgeable on motors but i guess i am learning ,LOL.... I definitely know how to turn some wrenches when i have to. Thank you in advance...

FITV (Fast Idle Throttle Valve), is the one circled in yellow in the picture below. You need to take the cover off, and screw the wax ring down all the way, then back it off just a little (one and one half turns maybe). You should hear air come through the gap, until the engine warms up. Then the air should stop coming out. It probably wouldn't hurt to take it off, and clean it from the bottom either. Sweet, i will try that tomorrow. should i have to replace this part ever or just give it a good cleanin ? I will clean first to see what that does 4 sure. Peace, Squigs.

There used to be a thread (maybe it's in the FAQ) about how to clean the iacv and the fitv, using carberator cleaner. Not sure if it's there or not. You can check it out for yourself. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

i have a 91 and mine does that when its cold and some one told me it was the cold start senser after it warms up its fine you should try that

Also check your PCV valve; the valve failed in my 90 Accord LX and it idled at just about 1500 rpm. You should be able to check it by simply pulling the PCV valve out the valve cover and covering it with your thumb; if the engine idle drops - change the PCV.

Ok, i cleaned it and re adjusted it this morning, after car is warm i still hear air, i adjusted it again and only backed it out 1 whole turn, it is a little better but not much, i do believe this part is bad,so i went back into it and tightened,but not to overtighten it and it runs a little better, but i still get the surge of idle when at a red light or stop sign or just pulling the car into the driveway at low rpm's.

When i put into neutral the idle goes to 2000 rpm and then down to normal of 1000 rpm's.

I unplugged the TPS and it still does it and definitely runs like hell, in between gears the idle with the tps unplugged kinda sluggish before going into next gear. So i hooked the TPS back up and i still have the same problem.

I am thinkin' this is a sensor of some sort---Or i pay 100.00 and take it to Honda dealership for some guy to tell me ---UUhhhh, we dont know, how do you want to pay, cash or credit /// HA, Hell no , i wont gooooo......

Maybe spray some carburetor cleaner on the vacuum hoses and around the throttle body, to see if you have a leak somewhere. When the vacuum sucks up the cleaner, it will let you know. Just an idea.

do you have any engine codes? theyres a writeup on cb7tuner on how to fix this.

There are no codes on the computer, i will do the carb cleaner trick to see what up.

Hondas were made to idle high when you first turn them on, it warms up the engine. Its a good thing. If your car does the same thing mine does it should stop reving high after 2-3 mins of after you push it a little.

That's just called choke, pretty much every gasoline engine has one.

hey squiggle..... been there with that problem before... what you need to do, or at least what i did, was change the idle by the screw on the throttle body. its not hard to reach but you'll need a thin flathead screwdriver. Turn your car off then adjust it. Rotate it to the right to take it down, i believe. then turn ur car on and check the idle speed then... keep adjust till its where it should be.. hope this helps. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif
