How to keep door seals and handles from freezing?
 

Hi..Do anyone know how to keep the door seals and handles from freezing? Can you use motor oil on the door seals?

Just keep a can of deicer handy. You can't keep them from freezing, you just have to be prepared when they do.

That, or just take the day off from school or work.

vegetable oil, or a light coat of silicone lubricant; they sell it at any plumbing supply place.

Try graphite lube for your door locks... It comes in a small toothpaste like tube...

For your door seals, try lubing them with 100% silicone spray... Or get used to kicking your door a couple times to get it open on icy mornings ... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Is it a good idea to use graphite lube on door seals?..I bought some an on the label it says it's good for rubber under extreme temps.

I probably would stick to silicone for door seals... graphite tends to get a little messy on a larger scale application like a door seal... I'd hate to get that stuff on on my clothes getting in and out of my car... The choice is yours... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Agreed, use graphite inside the lock cylinder and silicone lubricant on the rubber seals.

My question is would the graphite lubricant cause damage to the door seals? When I applied the lubricant, it seemed to dry off completely:crook: . I guess it froze from the (-18 degrees celcius) cold weather.

Yea you wouldn't wanna put the graphite on the rubber part of the seals, unless it's in the velvet like area of the window tracks. But primariy keep it in the lock cylinder, and yes the silicone lubricant should look like it evaporates not unlike electronic parts cleaner. But if you run your fingers down after putting a good layer on it, it should feel slippery.

Crap..I put some of the graphite lubricant on the seal. I guess I'm gone have to wipe it off tomorrow and go buy some silicon lubricant for the seals.

dont get any ideas im kidding... but autozone has a spray can stuff and it has a scraper on the edge that works on the locks and door not just the windows

Do you need to apply silicon lubricant every year around the door seals to prevent them from freezing?

Depends on the vehicle I guess, i've never had an issue with my civic doors freezing shut, but I know guys with VWs that have all kinds of trouble. Best thing to do is clean the door jambs really well and wax them, the apply silicone spray to the rubber door seals.
