Honda V6..

Honda is really known for their engineering and the awesome engines. I even hear people talk about how great the V6 is. Honda's V6 puts out 286bhp and 256lf-ft with 212cu in. BUT the lexus is smaller at 210cu in and puts down 306bhp and 277lf-ft. Infiniti is 1cu-in larger and also makes more hp and torque. Maybe its just me, but I don't think the honda V6 is that good, am I completely wrong by saying this?

What V6 are you referring to? The Accord v6 in the latest models is solely to the accord to my knowledge, the older ones in the 5th and 6th gens were craptastic. There's tons of things that you can do to the engine to gain that 20 hp, you can't compare just all v6's based solely on hp, I would pay attention to how efficient it is at getting the horse power it does. IE f20/22c engines for example, I4's that throw down a good amount of power

Numbers don't mean everything, plus you're looking at paying quite a bit more for a Lexus/Infinity would you not?

Re: Honda V6.. (93Accord117)

WHy do you think honda engines last at long as they do? they dont sqeeze every horse/cm³ that they can, by doing so you create an engine that isnt under as much stress. So your statemtent is true, those other companys do make a lighter/smaller engine that makes more power. So what? we drive economy cars, not high end luxury sedans.

Are the lexus/ infinity engines going to go 500,000+ miles with minmal maitnace?

Re: Honda V6.. (skingfreak)

They probably should. I read an article of a guy putting a million miles on his 1989 saab. Saab gave him a 2007 A5- Aero for FREE

I remember hearing about a guy that did that on a Honda down in maybe NC? And Honda gave him a new Accord Free and put the 1,000,000 Honda in a dealer showroom

Yeah I know, I wasnt trying to be an ass either i was just saying..

Somebody look into that free car after million mile thing, I might have nothing better to do than try for that, 900k more for me.

The V6 vs those luxury companies also costs far more to get the cars with them in it. When the accord comes close without that cost, thats an embarassment to them. Like somebody else said thats not a huge difference and the engine is engineered to last not race. Anymore numbers don't really impress me, I think there should be some way to calculate total hp produced throughout the entire powerband as thats really a true test, who cares if it peaks at 240 when the rest of the powerband its below 200. Somebody invent something like that.

it takes toyo and nissan double cam, vtc, lots of tech to make power, honda's V6s still use runty single cam heads.

Re: Honda V6.. (93Accord117)

it's all between cost versus output versus reliability. All of those engings you mention fail to get the fuel economy that honda does

and the honda 3.5L that you speak of is not for honda branded car's it's for Acura.

I find it amusing that I spend $300 for headers and I get 30HP while keeping reliability and fuel economy....

lets compare honda engines to american manufacturers

Honda 3.0L 240 HP ford needs .5L more to best it GM needs a Super charged V6 to beat it and an additional .8L or a V8

Does GM have a 3.0L that can directly compete with the output of Honda motors?

Does Ford have a 3.0L that can directly compete with it? (the used to have a Yamaha engine that would have owned it but they killed it off)

Acura cars sell extremely well even though they are "underpowered" compared to their competitors.....HP does not mean everything you know

Plus we only need 87 octane mang!!!! The other cars need at least premium. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

The J motors are pretty old, honestly. The VTEC design is rather old fashioned compared to the designs in the latest K motors.

It suits the purpose, however, in its various iterations of J30, J32 and J35, up to and including the 300 HP in the AWD RL.

Excellence can probably be defined by an overall performance, not a single characteristic.

For example, my own 2006 HFP Coupe gets 30 miles per gallon most of the time. The secondary intake opens at one speed, and it comes on the cam at another speed...very easy to manage for good fuel economy but still able to manage some decent acceleration when the time calls for it.

We also have to realise that Honda is not much into the horsepower numbers game. They haven't cared about that for a long time. I don't think they ever recovered from the ignominy of being the feature marque in the Fast and Furious hoo-ra. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

In any event, I think that 2008 will bring us some interesting changes in the mid-size lines powered by the J motors.

Regular gas in the Accord, but premium in many other J motors.

The most recent J motor Accords will gain a surprising number of horses and get better gas mileage on premium, however. You have to leave it on premium, though.

It takes several tanks of premium for the computer to full recognise the optimum settings, and a single fill of regular gas will reset to the defaults.

Those are way good points, very true. That did help out quite a bit, and the next accord is sopposed to have quad exhaust tips! oh yea, riding dirty.

Re: Honda V6.. (George Knighton)

so what if it is old tech....it works and it works well. When honda sees a need to update the J series, they will. and 10HP is not a suprising number of horses https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif it is only a 4.2% gain (Honda states that 03+ accord V6 gains 10hp by increasing octane to 91)

The-Kid 01-08-2007 07:19 PM

Honda hasn't really perfected the art of V6 engines. I know infiniti and other high end cars only use V6 and higher. I know for sure Honda has perfected the 4cyl. They have the most L4 models. The H series, B and F. Only V6 that i know of is the J series and C series.

Imma ask you this. Why does the 2005 NSX with only 3.2 L make close to 300hp? Hmmm....

Yea everyone has had some way good points I didnt see. Then again I believe it had a higher limit, more agressive cams, and ran on 91 octane??? I really dont know but that would make sence. The K20 is a beast though, id hit that, then put it in my accord.
