Oxy/Ace Welding... Weld on a muffler?
I've only got access to an oxy/ace welder and need to weld on a muffler.
Will it work effectively? The only thing i've welded a muffler with was a MIG back in high school and I've only welded thicker metal with oxy. |

it wont be that strong or efficient, but hey if youre good enough i dont see why not if thats the only method of welding you have. Or you can take it to a muffler shop to weld it on for you it will only be about 20 bucks

Uh, ok. I'm pretty sure an oxy fuel weld is fairly strong, if done correctly. It is slow, yes, but so is GTAW welding it. If you know how to oxyfuel weld and have the proper rod by all means go for it. |

What would you're guys' definition of know how to weld? and what kind of rods?
The most Oxy i've done was just to get proper beads in Metal Shop (Pipe to plate, angle, etc...) |

Not much different on the tubing than a flat plate, I'd recommend doing it on a work bench and not under the car though. Is it mild or stainless?

Oxy/Acetylene will work fine on exhaust, depending on your ability of course, It's done all the time even at dealerships (I know of one for sure)
Just practice on scrap before you ruin your nice new muffler... This is all assuming mild steel, SS is kind of a different story. |

It's a cheapo thrush (ES Oval Copy) i'm welding to my stock piping.

gas welding is as strong if not stronger than tig welding assuming its been done properly
its been used to build aircraft till i belive sometime in the 80's before they changed it gas weld using a neutral flame, for mild steel no prep is really neccessat besides maybe wire brushing for stainless u can weld it just like stainless but it will form sugar on the back side of the weld if you dont purge it with some inert gas use the type of filler rod that you would normally use for tig welding the material, also make sure the rod is the same thickness as the thicknes off the tubing wall thickness and do it off the car, ull get a better weld and u wont burn catch the car on fire |
