Flywheel bolts came loose after 750 miles
 

I bought an Exedy stage 1 clutch kit and type r flywheel for my 99 honda civic si. I put everything on, torqued everything to spec, greased everything up, and threw the transmission back on. I babied the cluctch for the first 750 miles according to the instructions. Then yesterday, my wife was driving home and she heard somewhat of a grinding noise at high rpms. Didn't know exactly what it was so she drove home. When she finally got close to home and hit a stop light, she took the car out of gear and then wasn't able to get the car back into gear. She said when the car wasn't on, it would go into gear. We got it towed home, pulled the transmission, clutch, and pressure plate off to find that 2 of the flywheel bolts were almost completely out and the rest were hand tight. Here is the damage:

Here you can see were the flywheel was rubbing up against the crank the dark/rust spots

My questions to you guys are: Can I still reuse the disk? Should I have the flywheel checked out? Could anything be wrong with the crank? Any ideas why the flywheel bolts came loose?

Damn that's really weird, are you definitely sure you tightened them up well you bolted everything up?

Generally excessive vibrations cause bolts to come loose... but I don't see where that would happen. http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

Yeah, I torqued them down to spec and even used thread locker on them. So I am totally stumped on why they came out. I have the energy suspension motor mount inserts but I don't see how that would have caused them to back out now and not before.

I was gonna say "Didn't use loctite eh?" but then I read your post. I have no idea man...

maybe you tighten to the wrong specs. just do like me and tighten small bolts hand tight and big bolts with my foot

Yeah this next time that's how it's gonna be. I just don't want to buy another disk if I could reuse the one that rubbed up agaisnt the flywheel bolts.

what did you torque them to?

what kind of torque wrench? is it properly calibrated?

87 lb-ft craftsman torque wrench and yes it was properly calibrated I even cycled it before I used it.

i think that the flywheel was warped, from my experience, not torqing down the flywheel to spec wont cause that to happen..

on all of my cars i have never tightened it down to spec like i was supposed to... just with an air gun... and i have never had an issue

wtf, I have my new exedy stage 1 clutch and lightweight flywheel on the bench downstairs and I'm like oh lemme just check HT real quick.

That's actually what I thought, is there anyway for me to check if the flywheel is warped.

take that bitch to like carquest or something...

just a machine shop, they will check it for you..

you shouldnt grease the spline. and i always use a impact gun to bolt on the flywheel. mine came loose before on me too and i torque it to 85 ft lbs. after that i just use a impact

okie, quick question, as it wasn't asked:

how did you hold the flywheel when you torqued the bolts? did you do anything to secure it?

Did you tighten them in a criss-cross pattern? I think you just dident torque them down properly.. thats weird. I never use loctite either, never had that happen to me, now that I type this my bolts are going to come loose https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

This is strange. I have done a few clutches and never had this happen. I never use locktite either... I have the Honda manual and just follow the book, it hasn't led me wrong yet. Good luck.

That is about the stupidest thing I've heard of. Every bolt has a point at which it begins to stretch. This varies by grade, size, etc. Once you start stretching a bolt it becomes weak and more likely to break. But hey, it's your car, do what you want.

I've done more clutch/flywwhel jobs than I can remember and it's never happened to me even one time. I don't use loctite and I tighten everything to spec in the proper sequence.

Something was done incorrectly or the flywheel was damaged. Period.

long-short:

flywheel was prolly not warped
most likely tightened in wrong sequence or didnt re-torque
next time use the red loc-tite just to be sure
take the flywheel and clutch disc to the machine shop, as they will be able to see the damage more clearly and tell you if the flywheel is warped. they will tell you the true extent of your problem (seeing as you go to a GOOD machine shop)

this happened recently to a customers car. Less than 750 miles and torqued in the proper sequence and to proper specs as per the Honda manual. A fidanz* flywheel was used. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmileo.gif

I know this is an old post but I just had this happen to me. everything torqued to spec and and double checked.I also have dome many clutch jobs on many diffrent vehicles and never has had tis happen before.

I was wondering if anyone that has had this happen figured out what went wrong?
