Oil Changes & Oil Life

I've only read the manual briefly, but I don't specifically see when it says to change your oil. The dealer said something about the oil life%, and nothing about every 3000 miles. When is it recommended to change it? When it hits 0%? or every 3K? And what about for break-in period? TY

The maintnence minder calculates the oil life (pretty effictively) by your driving habits. When it gets to 15% then it's time for the indicated sefvice A1,2,3,4,5,6 or so on...

Press the select key on the left side of the steering wheel. It'll cycle between Miles for trip A, B, total and outdoor temperature/Oil Life. I'm at 4000 ish miles now and got 40% life left https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

This technology is amazing https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

I wonder if you will get more miles out of the oil with synthetic?

Fuster_Cluck 04-13-2006 04:54 PM

BUMP!

When you change the oil do you have to reset the system? Or does the motor automatically detect the new oil and reset its self to 100%??

haby red fg2 04-13-2006 04:58 PM

you have to reset it on your on you have to hold the reset button down for like a minute on the oil life screen

hold the sel button for 9 seconds at oil life screen. once it starts blinking, release button and press sel button as many times until oil reaches 100%

yeah, synthetic is supposed to be able to run up to about 5K miles (as opposed to 3K with conventional motor oil) - which would justify the higher cost.

However, many people will say to change it just as regularly, instead of trying to "milk" 5K miles out of it. Also, when you put synthetic, I'm not sure if the computer recognizes that it's synthetic and might still give you the "OIL LIFE %" that would correspond to conventional oil. What I'm saying is that I don't think that the car's computer can distiguish between the two, but rather goes off of mileage. Anyone know for sure????

the indicator just goes off the miles

thats it NOTHING to do with quality of the oil

its for people that never remember to change the oil
so a light goes on and reminds them

Must be based off how much highway vs. city driving is done. Especially since it has to be set back to 100% manually. I actually thought this was new technology reading the oil quality http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif Just a reminder for the dummies out there who abuse the regular maintenance https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emdgust.gif

Re: Oil Changes & Oil Life (SneezinCD5)

i have been told that this has nothing to do with milage. i'm in canada so i'm runnin' in KM but my first oil change was at approx 7500km but it was an odd number i.e. 7568km and now i'm up to 13000+ and still have 40% oil life so i don't think it's tied to milage at all.

could be wrong but that's what i've been told.

Re: Oil Changes & Oil Life (mooseheads36)

Oil life is a "computed value" based on powertrain data from the engines sensors. The onboard computer keeps a running tally, so when it hits a certain number - your maintance light turns on.
Honda doesn't have an onboard oil analysis sensor, so your maintance light will trip even though your synthetic oil is still good. You'll have to send a sample of your used engine oil to a lab to verify its' stability.
Good quality synthetic oils can easily go 10K miles before there are any detectable breakdown in the oil through certified lab analysis.
I used to own a VW turbo diesel that required European spec. synthetic oil. The OEM spec. oil change interval was 10K miles. So if synthetic oil can withstand a hot turbo-charger and dirty diesel fuel for 10K; A clean gasoline burning non-turbocharged motor should be a "cake-walk" for synthetic oils https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif
