Professional Satin black paint jobs - pic & info request

I've been tossing around the idea of having a true "Satin" black car for a while - just curious if anyone has any pictures of a car w/a true Satin finish, that was professionally done or equivalent.

I've heard of a color by PPG called "Hot Rod black" - anyone have any examples of this color on a car?

This car is what made me want to do it, and is the exact "look" I'll be going for. The Skunk2 cars are pretty hot as well.

I would like to know as well.
And how it holds up to the weather and what not.

Buetang 02-01-2006 09:48 AM

Its my understanding (from speaking to a friend of mine whos bike has a satin tank/fender) that Satin holds up fine to weather, only problem is.. w/a car as opposed to a bike is surface area and long term cleaning. Meaning... if you get water spots on a satin bike, aside from it not showing up as bad, you can probably clean it enough that its not as easily detected. W/a car when we get water spots.. we just wax it. You can't wax a satin car. Thats the only problem I know of.

I'm sure there is some form of cleaning product that is made for satin cars. Hot Rod guys have had satin cars for years and years..

From what my painter told me, it's a satin clearcoat and what chemicals you use to mix the paint to get the look. You can still wax it and care for it the same. If you dont dry your car off after a wash, just like a gloss clearcoat, it will leave water spots. I almost did this to my car in a grey color. Just go to someone who knows what their doing, NOT a $200 drive through paint shop.

Cool man, you kind of reassured me of what I was already thinking.

This type of paint job should be no more/no less than a normal quality paint job. I'm figuring anywhere from 2k to 3k for the entire car including engine bay, jams and trunk.

We'll see, i'll keep you guys posted w/pictures and cost once I get the project going.

If you want it to look good, you need to get a base/clear job. You get just the regualr black base, then you get a flat or semi-gloss (whatever you want) clear sprayed on top. If you get just primer, it will fade and primer also absorbes water and it will get traped under the coat of primer, which would not be good. I think PPG or somebody like that makes a bunch of flat or semi-gloss clears, and I think that would be the best way to go if you want it to last.

If it gets dirty clean it with armorall.

D-series ninja 02-01-2006 11:02 AM

from what ive heard PPG has came out with a "clearcoat" for satin paint to where it still retains its satin finish, but you can wash it and it wont look like shit

thats just what ive heard. ive always wanted a dark dark red satin car with bronze wheels.. always thought that woulda looked nice https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif
