4th Generation or 5th Generation Type S?
I don't want to start any wars but...
I am looking at Preludes at the moment, and I have fond memories of my 4th generation JDM VTEC - Si with it's lit up wrap arround dash, and seats. My buddy has a 5th Gen and the interior isn't as special in my opinion, and I find the seats lack upper body support. However I can get my hands on either a 1996 or 1997 Type S (yes a genuine JDM Prelude with 220ps / 162kw and ATTS), both white. The alternative is a Black 1996 4th Gen 5 speed manual with low K's. I understand the type S will go round corners like it's on rails, but with the extra weigth of the ATTS, is no faster in a straight line despite additional power. Are there any compelling arguments for or against either? |
IMO, the 4th gen looks the best. Between the 2, I would get the 5th gen. The ATTS can be removed.

i was in your same place about a year ago. well, i now have a 5th gen prelude. i think the weight difference is very minimal, and good driving can overcome any weight disadvantages of the 5th gen. the 5th gens have better handling and brakes in my opinion. the 4th gens do look better inside and out, but the 5th gen has a very unique front end. plus the 5th gen has jdm type-s upgrades available. its up to you, the pros and cons of each car will have to be weighed by you in the end.

Its kinda hard to pass up a Type S engine.

I'm down in New Zealand and we import a hell of a lot of used JDM cars - we are right hand drive like Japan. So every JDM model is avaialble in New Zealand - so I am talking about an original JDM type S Prelude. Some are avaialble with nice after market bits like Mugen exhausts, Mugen intakes etc. So my untimate Prelude would be a nice 1996 4th Gen - with a Type R or Type S JDM H22A transplant. If I go for a 5th Gen type S I will need to invest in some new front seats, of have the original modified to provide more support. My intention is to use the Prelude for fun, and hill climbs (timed runs up hills with lot's of corners) - the Type S with ATTS would be ideal. The Type S will cost about $NZ10,500 ($NZ1.00 buys about $US0.70). I'm selling my CBR1100XX to finance the Prelude. |

I'm going to see this one tomorrow - unfortunately my CBR1100XX hasn't sold yet. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade...6.htm |
Re:
If you can, look into the 5th gen SIR. IMO, far better than both cars you have listed.
|
the SIR is nice, and i prefer the helical LSD to ATTS, but too much ATTS bashing here lately. it's a good system, and in some situations works better than an LSD (like low speed, tight corners).
imo, if you're gonna keep it relatively simple with the mods, i'd go with the type s. if you think you'll be doing other shit like turbo, SC, high cost NA buildup, it'll prob be easier to work with the 4th. The one burn about the type-s is the tranny. The ratios aren't as nice as the M2F4 in the 4th gen, and there's no way around it b/c of the ATTS. anyone know if you can use an aftermarket FD in an atts tranny? |
Re: (bad-monkey)
why 96 4th gen? wouldnt u rather have obd1?
|
Re: (93h22a1vtec)
A 96 here mean sold new in 96, not manufactured in 96 - so yes an OBD1 would be preferable.

Re: (jimakazi)
Get the 5th gen, type s motor 11:1 compression, climate control, 220hp 3 spoke wheel..... If you don't want it send it over for us https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif
