D16A motor

Hi, I was looking to find information on a JDM D16A ... there ain't much out there, except that eveyone thinks that the D16A "JDM" is really an older 88-91 USDM Civic motor with 92-106 HP. I think Honda just recycled engine codes.
I am looking for information since I just bought a late model JDM D16A and I wanted a D16Z6 and my JDM importer shipped the D16A instead. (yes, I know there was never a JDM D16Z6). Anyway.. I was worried that HP will be too low or too high for that matter. All the auto-crossing organizers like SCCA and track clubs here in the northeast want me to have a stock motor to run Street Touring. Sucks to be me now that I have the JDM D16A. Before I go ape shit on the JDM importer that he promised one thing and I got the other... I decided to do some homework.

I found these links that might help:

http://www.geocities.com/Motor....html

The late model D16A engine is off '95 or '97 EK5 or '96-'97 EK8.

http://www.alljapanesecars.com...=1997

The EK5 was rated at 120 HP and EK8 at 105 HP. Regardless of the year or model, D16A has the same stroke and bore as a D16Z6, but the D16A has a 9.4 comp ratio where the Z6 is 9.2.

http://www.cars-directory.net/...2498/

I noticed that years stated that the D16A was available is different between the last sites. Anyway... I assume that the horsepower is different because of LEV requirements. The big question remains what is really different between the two motors.

1) The P32 intake...

okay what else??? I have no idea. JDM HONDA-TECH GODS PLEASE HELP!!!

Re: D16A motor (martyr1391)

Actually there was a JDM D16Z6...they called it a ZC, just like the DOHC ZC. It's kind of a rare motor, but its exactly like our D16Z6 engine (same guts).

There actually were SOHC ZC engines from 88-92. Although, these motors came in different trims such as fuel injected, carburated, 1.3-1.6liters.

It does indeed sound like you have a JDM version of our 88-91 D16A6 engine, being that is not a VTEC engine. Japan normally over rates the HP or (PS in their case), but this compensates for the higher octane fuel they offer over there.

What to do is look for clues as to if you have a 1.6L engine.....if your engine looks 99% like a US D16A6 engine (PGMFi on intake manifold) it probably is, but in a JDM version.

Re: D16A motor (Katman)

The motor is actually stamped D16A. According to my reference, it was only available as JDM from 96-00 in a Civic EJ1, EK5 and EK8.

http://www.geocities.com/Motor....html

The block is also stamped P28, just like the D16Z6, so I agree, besides the pistons all the guts are the same. I don't know about the head yet, since I have not cracked it open to compare.

The intake on my D16Z6 is stamped with P08 HF-1. The intake on the D16A is stamped P32 ITP-1. Wicked strange. And yes, the D16A is a vtec motor... it has a soleniod and all. Actually, all the hookups are the same as D16Z6.

Wouldn't a "ZC" motor actually be stamped "ZC" on the block?

I corrected the URL links on first email.

How can one find out what car your motor can out of if you only have a motor serial number?

And are there any JDM factory service manuals in English?

werent the d16a6 engine in the crx si here in the states? i could have sorn they were because you can use that cam in a non-vtec d-series to get a lil bit more power.

Yes the d16a6 was in the 88-91 civic/crx SI..But the motor Im talkin about is D16a..No d16a6,a1,a8,a9,etc..All that is stamped on the block is "D16A" and it is vtec..Basically a d16z6 or sohc vtec zc..

Re: (projectTeG)

After much to do about nothing, we can conclude that the JDM D16A is exactly the same as a USDM D16Z6. Same block, D16, same pistons, P28, same head/cam, P08, same intake/TB, etc...

I just tore on them down both and I can't find a difference.

Re: (martyr1391)

I have basically the same problem with info on a D16A, we have swapped one from a JDM source that said the D16A SOHC vtec (sometimes stamped ZC) is equivalent to a US D16Y8. We did the swap into a 97civic EX D16Y8 with a bad bottom end (spun bearing). Everythig fit perfectly and we swapped the vtec solinoid unit and IM from the Y8 (did the usual timing belt, seals, water pump).

After the swap, there is a problem with the power. The engine lacks power from about 4500-5500 RPM until the vtec kicks at the 5500 like it should. I think the power loss is because the head on the D16A is cammed like a D16Z6 and it expects vtec at 4800 whereas the ECU and Y8 setup expect 5500 for vtec.

Our conclusion is that the D16A (ZC) late model 96-00 JDM SOHC is mechanically a D16Z6 with a crank sensor, knock sensor. The ECU in japan has to be different in maps and when it expects vtec.

Anyone know if we I can drop in the cam and maybe the valve train from the removed Y8 to solve the problem or do we need to swap heads? Beware of this issue when using a JDM engine to replace Y8's.

Hi there i have a d16a vtec to it's an import motor from japan they talk about a d16 as just a d16a the only other difference this motor has is it has higher compresion and it makes 125hp stock really awesome motor quiet

Hey I just got a 99" civic coupe and they have swaped a D16A on it.
And I found out it came from a HR-V from japan and came with 122hp and it was made from 99"-05".

Re: D16A motor (HAZARD_1310)

came into this forum rly late, but jsut thought ide throw down my 2 cents, ive had my d16a awhile, they made 2 different d16a's, one vtec, 1 non, came out of the ek's in japan, so pretty much japans d16y7 and y8, my d16a has the same compression as my y7 did, so internals and everything are the same, i imagine the same goes for the y8 version of the d16a

i have this motor in my car, i bought it from japan. d16a sohc vtec, i think it has 130 hp...

Re: D16A motor (d[sick]sTeena)

The JDM D16A motor has 130 PS, not hp. Works out to be 127 hp. Since the USDM D16z6 and JDM D16a motor are exactly the same, I would assume the D16a makes 125hp on 87 octance, where as when motor runs higher octane in Japan it produces more hp (or ps). https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

okokok.. see, now i'm confused.. because someone said that the d16a6 is in the civic si, well i have it, and it is a d16a3... and i am about to do a swap with a d16a dohc... its coming out of a 88 integra.. now.. you're telling me, that the vtec is only in the sohc? or is it in the dohc? http://is.rely.net/1-92-30009-l-tEzP...BTGi0jOCgA.gif

and this is for you Jimster480

the motor is currently in my garage, in a basket. its going to be a replacement for my blown d16y8, running obd-2 just by switching IM,alt, dist, etc... with no knock sensor

i heard that the JDM D16A is 3 more hp powerful than the D16Y8, so it might be 130hp and around 105-108 t/q. not sure but thats the info i need to be correct on. it could be a SOHC ZC

ok so I have a 1996-2000 1.6 sohc non vtec the block is stamped ZC, I am at that point where the timing belt and water pump need to be replaced, so my question is do all the 1.6L take the same timing belts ? or am I going to have to go about this the hard way? I know the techs at Honda probably wont be of any help so I am hoping some one here will be of help.

I have a bought 98ex with a bad d16y7. I ordered a d16y8 and they sent my a d16a i went ahead and had him put it in after having to switch the intake mani for wiring. The motor runs great until 5500 rpms and then sounds like its hiting a rex limiter. Any suggestions.
