Cam Timing off 180 degrees!

Ok, so I installed a ls distributor on my b16 backwards, yes I know I'm a dumbass for that. I guess between all banging and cutting of the ls mounting it didn't seem to forceful.
Ok, the question is can I just loosen the timing belt tensioner up and rotate the intake cam 180 degrees without touching anything else. I won't harm the pistons/valves by doing this will I. Or do I have to take the whole thing to fix it?

First off, why did you install an LS distributor on your b16?

Second off, did you actually install the CAM 180 degrees off or just the distributor?

Re: (LsVtec92Hatch)

b16 distributor was about to seize up on me being the bearing was going bad and it was starting to make noises so I replaced it with a ls distributor I had laying around. I know it works because a friend of mine ran one on his car all you have to do is break off the mounting bracket near the vtec soleniod. I installed the distributor 180 degrees backwards not the cam, but now my car won't start so I have to rotate it 180 degrees around. I wondering if I can do it the way I posted earlier.

how come u cant just take the dizzy off and put it back again the other way?...

i think i have the same problem..acura says its off 220 degrees tho and my intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time

how the hell did this happen? how did the timing belt slip for this to be possible and can it be fixed?

Combustion Contraption 08-31-2005 07:12 AM

Take the dizzy off and rotate the tang 180 degrees. Problem solved.

Re: (LsVtec92Hatch)

The distributor can only going in one way. That is why its off 180 degrees to begin with because I forced it in their, but it didn't seem like I forced it but apparently I did.

R-Toyz.com 08-31-2005 09:30 AM

damn...i hope you didn't damage the cams by forcing the dizzy in backwards https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif

Re: (goforbroke)

Um, you can't just turn the cam around 180*, that completely undermines the importance of cam timing. It won't run. That's a really bassackwards way of trying to fix a little screwup.

Re: (drdisco69)

Nope I didn't damage the cams I looked at them already. What would be a easy way of fixing it. I'm going to take it apart, but I know you can't change the dizzy around like that. Its not that simple, if it was I wouldn't be having this problem.

themorphious 08-31-2005 12:47 PM

the cam isnt going to be rotated because you installed a dist. 180 degrees the wrong way. It doesnt loosen the belt, cahgne the timing because you installed the dist. backwards.....it's got to be the dist installed wrong, dont change the cams. If it ran before you took the old distributor off, the timing of the cam cant be wrong. turn the dist. around the right way, and try to start it...it should work.....unless you have cahnged the timing to get this new dist. to fit..

Re: (themorphious)

Ok, I took everything apart and its still not working. I'm not sure if I"m confused or what. I have the crank pulley at TDC and when I put the camshafts at TDC the distributor is still 180 out of wack. The distributor is suppose to be pointing toward the 1 plug and its pointing the opposite way of the number 1. This isn't making sense to me.....

Re: (goforbroke)

Wow, I think I installed my rotor 180 degrees off. Because when I changed it the little brass peice came with the entire thing. Damn and I took apart everything already. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emdgust.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif hopefully I right about this. Man that was stupid. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emdgust.gif

yazo 08-31-2005 08:34 PM

dude when u put the dizzy in 180 degrees off did u try starting the car? this cud have ruined the timing even more!. its the same thing i did and then when i took the dizzy out to snugly fit it in again the car wudnt start at all cause i guess i threw the timing off soo much when i started it with it 180 off

any updates?

Re: (yazo)

Well I took the timing belt off and put everything to TDC and then I thought that i put the rotor on backwards in the distributor. The rotor can only go on one way, so then I looked at the little metal peice on the distributor that makes contact with the end of the camshaft. I had that on backwards and that is why my cam timing was off 180 degrees https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emdgust.gif I changed it around put everything back together did the timing and everything fired right up. Something that could of took say 10 minutes to fix turned into 3 hour job. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emdgust.gif
(Took three hours because I broke the extension on my rachet and had to go get my friends tools)
Car is running great. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

ripped it down that far and didnt bother to take peoples advice on this site......it turned out the poeple were right and you still tried taking the motor apart first?!?!?!....hmm........

goforbroke 08-31-2005 09:30 PM

Re: (themorphious)

Nobody mentioned that peice to me, well I fixed it and it runs. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

hey man. when u tried starting the car with the distributor off 180 degrees..did the engine start ticking at every rotation while u were trying to start? like click........click.......click

mine does that so i dont know if my valves are fucked or not

thanks

the ticking you hear is more than likely your injectors. mine are very noisy on my '95 LS. your valves shouldn't be making much noise. if they are, learn to adjust them! seriously it shouldn't take you more than an hour.
