burping coolant system by running car with heater on and no radiator cap--how long?

Hi guys,

I need to make sure all the air is out of the coolant system cause I just refilled it. My water outlet didn't have the bleed screw so I have to burp the system by runnin it with no rad cap.

My question is how long do I ned to keep it running until I can stop? Right now the coolant is all the way to the radiator neck. So should I just run the car until it is fully warmed up, or should I run it for a certain amount of time? in either case the coolant would start overflowing out the rad cap, so do I just ignore it and keep running the motor?

TIA

I just watch the water in the radiator neck, so it doesn't overflow. I also push & squeeze the radiator hoses to push air bubbles over one way or the other. If your cap & reservoir bottle are working correctly, the last little bubbles should work out the next couple times you drive.

After having it open, I check the hoses every day or so until they're full. When you squeeze the hoses cold, you can hear whether there's air sloshing around in there.

Yup, I "massage" the upper radiator hose too to get the air bubbles outand fluid to go down. I think I got most of the air bubbles out now since I've driven the car around for a bit.

can you see fluid at the radiator neck? maybe it's just very low . . . tell you guys the truth, i never use the bleed screw. i run it for about 5 mins w/heater on full hot, shut it off, leave it alone and next time it's cool and i'm thinking about it and in the mood i check the level and top off if needed. it only goes down a little tiny bit, and your car will stay cool with only half of its coolant capacity.
