b20 turbo or b18 turbo?
have a stock rs right now. just picked it up. wonderin if i should boost my stock motor or get a b20 in there and boost that? which one is more safer and reliable to boost? i know neither is safe for boost without building the motor, but is the b18 safer to boost than the b20?

Re: b20 turbo or b18 turbo? (importdays)
Well its POSSIBLE to SMOG a b18 with a Greddy turbo. light truck/suv motors are not SMOGable in cars...
|
boost the b18. i had a b20 vtec turbo and it was fast but it blew pretty quick, unless your going to spend the big money and sleeve it go with the b18, thats what i have now and i still make 220 whp and its reliable.

Re: (B18 rider)
maybe ur b20 blew cause u had the vtec setup bro. are the cylinder walls too thin on the b20 for boost?
|
Re: (importdays)
i believe that they are thinner then the LS blocks, but you could still boost a b20 as long as you get the right tune.

i smogged my b20 with no problem...and i'm in cali. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif |

who cares about legal everyone breaks the law at least once in their lives. but still id say go with the b18, then you will have more money to build it up.

I speed all the time! This is not about ethics! It's about not being able to get your car registered unless you find someone to overlook the visual inspection. |
Re: b20 turbo or b18 turbo? (jasonw)
then just befriend someone who works doing that and then casually bring it up. it happens all the time in WI believe me. they' ll do anything for the rite price
|
Had a b20 turbo, great low end. Now got a built b18. I'll let you know how it goes

He's right. However, I would stick with the b18. To reiterate, the b20 cylinder walls are thinner than the b18b and the sleeve will therefore be more prone to cracking. I believe the power difference between the two, IMHO, is negligible anyway and not worth the extra cash for a b20. Plus, the money saved from not buying a b20 will allow you to upgrade your b18 more. But whatever route you choose, just make sure you have a good tuner. |

Re: (GoCarInteg)
the LS/VTEC conversions are more prone to fail at high RPMs because the rod bolts and long stroke were not designed to withstand the high engine speeds that VTEC heads are optimized for. thats why b18 riders setup didn't work out.
|
I heard the stock b20 block can hold its own with a nice turbo and a daily tune.

Re: (h22a_accord_ca)
Maybe...but a set of ARP rodbolts for an LS is cheap to come by, so problem solved

lsvtecs are prone to fail because people cheap out on the build and when it does inevitably fail, blame it on the motor and not their own stupidity. |
Re: b20 turbo or b18 turbo?
id say go with the gsr and it will run fine
|
Re: b20 turbo or b18 turbo?
The B18 is your best bet. It's been beaten to death that the cylinder walls on B20's are thinner which means the potential of cracking is higher. Sure you can crack B18 walls too, but it will take more power and more time.
Build the B18 right, tune it, drive it, enjoy it. |
Re: b20 turbo or b18 turbo?
B18!
|
Re: b20 turbo or b18 turbo?
well this dude i know had a b20/vtec boosted in his white hatch ran 12s then put the motor in a dc with 16 psi ran 11.6. then he put it in a ek hatch boosted. then put it in ek 4dr no boost tho and that motor is still running . so i think its all in you tune and if you take care of it. if you beat it all day every day or other day and dont take care of it well than your out come wont be so go. im going b20 boosted ima apr rod bolts and head studs and a block guard and sum head work. i want at least 10 psi daily driven see what happens
