power steering fluid shooting out the resevoir

I'm hearing a grinding noise from my car and i was wondering if it was because i didnt have enough power steering fluid in the resevoir, which was just below the minimum( supposed to be betweend min.&max.) so as i was turning the wheel and watching the power steering pump there was fluid coming out of the resevoir with the cap on!! what the deeal?! http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

Im guessing that there is too much pressure in the pump maybe and thats why the fluid came pouring out, but im not too sure

mine did that after i put in NON honda fluid 2 weeks after I got my car.

Guess who has manual steering now.

Even though I totally shoulda known better, I HONESTLY think there should be a "Your PS will explode if you use ANYTHING but honda PS fluid". Instead of "Only use Honda Genuine Fluids" (That type of phrase is used everywhere).

Wait, i work for honda. Maybe I should sugggest that. haha.

I imagine alot of people that are not familiar with honda's would buy regular power steering fluid and ruin there pumps. I have never owned a honda before, and am so glad that when I first went to buy power steering fluid I saw some "made for Honda" specific fluid, saved my ass.

I always used Honda in my GSR, but in the civic I put in shitty $.99 shit and it seems to be working fine.

Loosen the power steering belt. If you put it on too tight, the fluid will boil.

How is that?!

You need some of those "mAd TiGhT" JDM spoon reservoir covers now https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

It should be the other way around usually. But too tight will force the shaft/bearing to have too much stress on the mating surface and cause heat up.

Use 5mm flex on the long side as guideline on how tight the belt should be.

ever seen this scenario? My ps was not working and eventually the fluid boiled out. I changed the pump and it worked for about 1 min. then stopped working again and the fluid boiled out once more. any idea what the culprit might be, besides the belt being too tight?

boiled out? Its hard to boil fluid until it dissappears....are you sure that the pump didnt just pump it all to the rack and that u needed to add more?

Maybe your power steering cooler is bad.

Pootie 08-11-2005 06:14 PM

this stuff boiled...started smoking.....I don't think it's the cooler because it stopped working only after 1 minute...okay boiling, i dont' know, but it started smoking and started gushing out from either the pump or the reservoir
