AC Problem -- Refrigerant wont leave the can and go into the car
 

I tried to recharge my AC system (96 civic, uses R-134) and I am having some issues. I connected the hose to the Low connection port, hooked up the can and released the freon. The freon wont leave the can, it just sits there. The can doesn't get cold really.... the top is definitly pierced, I have the car running and AC on blast but the freon wont leave the can and go into the car. I can shake the car profusly, nothing happens, turn it upside down, place it in a bucket of warm water, etc..... I am just wasting Freon trying to charge my car.

Does the car have to be level, front or rear pointing down? AC Compressor seems to work fine. I dont know what else it could be.

ur 96 car is r-134a, not r-12!!!!!!!!!!!

lol. ruh roh raggy. just get a shop to pull the whole thing down for you and get a good vacuum on it. It's not much at all for a evac and recharge with no repair involved.

are you using the recharge kit w/ a gauge inline? if so, what is it reading? if without, you have no way of knowing what the system pressure is.

when you press down on the low side valve, does pressure escape? perhaps you have a stuck valve? if not, then I would look at the hose end of the charger to make sure there is a pin which is suppose to push the valve open to let the refrigerant flow from the can into the system.

btw, turning the can upside down is not a good idea. you want the liquid inside the can to be in a gas state when entering the system ,which is why they say to shake the can when refilling.

my bad. I was thinking one thing and typed another. I am using 134. I do have a bunch of cans of R-12 still though. Pressure releases the system when I push the pin.

do you have a gauge to read pressure on the low side?

is your compressor clutch on? if not then thats why your its not sucking it in on hte low side. i would take it to a shop to get it done right. that way they can evacuate the system and suck out all the moisture,dirt, oil and recharge your system to operate at max potential.

You need to know your pressure to insure the system is working correctly. If you can get a high and low pressure guages, it you help you better.
