CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin
hey.. im new to this post and i just got my parents honda crv.. 97.. i dont want ppl to go around bashin me or the car im just lookin for supportive oppinions or ideas. My friends have trucks.. a Chevy S10 and Ford Ranger.. we all want to go out to the back roads - not necessarily muddin, but a lot of bumps/hills/dips/DIRT. I know the CRV can put up with it and there si rear wheel and the CRV is all wheel - just wonderin bout sum opinions on that. Also, ive been lookin to put a small lift kit on this car and get bigger tires - i wanna stand out and be one of a kind - just curious if any 1 has seen this or knows about it. I looked for a kit but didnt find.
Thanx for ur time and input Shane |

I go off roading in my CRV all the time..
There is one company that makes a lift kit I can't remember it off the top of my head. Ill post the links later when I get to my other computer in the mean time. enjoy these off road CRV pics http://www.hondasuv.com/forum_crv/fi...1044774044.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...4/f8bd921f.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...1/f8bd8d75.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...1/f8bd8cdd.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...b/f8bd8c0d.jpg http://www.programguiden.se/honda/barro.JPG http://www.programguiden.se/honda/agua.JPG http://www.programguiden.se/honda/barro1.JPG and some pics of my CRVentures http://www.ef-honda.com/albums/campa...s/DSC03460.jpg http://www.ef-honda.com/albums/campa...s/DSC03466.jpg http://www.ef-honda.com/albums/campa...s/DSC03494.jpg |
Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin (Chris_)
i am most definitely getting a CRV now...screw the accord or TL.
|
suxx
yea well i went out off roadin.. and it totally screwed my CRV up real bad.. like now there is oil leaking and during it the left front tire was making a thunking noise when i went over a bump
i guess it depends on where u go.. but from my experience i wont do it ever again |
Re: suxx (Shaned197)
lmao...i love people like you, when me and my friends take the quads out, its fun watching people take the parents little SUV's out there and not understand what they can and cant do. Recently watched an RX300 roll over sideways in a larger mud pit...rather funny.
Those CR-V pics are impressive for those little jeep things...but i gotta say, i dont think i'd ever trust one to do half of those things in those pictures, not saying that they cant, but i'd prefer a larger ground clearance toyota or something, i used to have a blast iwth my old 4-Runner before i sold it. Anyways...you tell your parents what you were doing with their car? lol... |
Re: suxx (hypnosisracing)
well... my mom took it out sum place b4 and caused damage to it.. but thats cuz she went through a huge puddle - like up the windshield.. and i felt liek tryin it - so no i didnt tell them lol
i guess it really depends on how well u can drive it and whether u know the area good enuff my CRV is styll runnin fine on the road.. so idk if n e thin is really messed up but i think i see oil https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif |
Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin (Chris_)
Impressive pics, its neat to see the little crv that could, but I have to wonder how often these people have to replace their rear diff/clutch pack since it just wasn't intended for that kind of use, or I'd like to know what kind of mods they've performed to increase the durability...

no lift, no larger tires
new car. |
Re: (RangerJoe)
I have never seen a lifted CRV before, those look sick. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

you should be required to not make non stupid posts for the first year of being here.

Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin (Iridium130m)
The rear dif is clutchless it has some kind of viscosity system.
you just need to make sure your fluid gets replaced every 30k or so. |
Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin (Chris_)
the newest CRV model(2004+)use gears in the diff. before, it was a clutch-pack.
|
Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin (Chris_)
1st gens do use a clutch pack and dual pump fluid to engage the clutches, I am not familiar with the tech in the 2nd gens but do know they are supposed to lock up much faster with less wheel spin then the first ones. If Honda ditched the clutch pack / pump set up (a throw back to the OLD 4wd civics) and went with a more modern subaru like viscous lockup system, then they should be much more durable then the first gens clutch pack and able to take more of a beating, but I'd still be conserned that it is still a part time system and not a full time like a subies or a chain driven transfer case in jeep for example.
All I know is that I climbed some seriously snow covered side streets (approx 6-7") in mine for a couple miles and the rear end was whining pretty bad by the top until I stopped and let it cool down. Now granted, I had my right foot pretty firmly planted in it so it wasn't just one of those gradual accents, but the snow throwing from all 4 wheels kind courtesy of the control of the 5 speed, so I'm sure that had something to do with it as well. |
Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin (Iridium130m)
you just need to change your rear dif fluid it will eliminate the whine in the rear end

nice pics! i been looking all over for a decent priced one

Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin (Chris_)
About the stupid question I own a 98 crv 5 spd and have done everything possible with it from pulling civics out of snow taking it wheeling i hooked a 2000 chevy s10 zr2 and in 4 hi slighlty pulled the truck however when he was in 4 lo i had no chance but the truth is you can do anyhting to these vehicles and they will put up with it just yesterday i got a 60" mower stuck in a pond and on an incline in first gear the old crv pulled it out sure i smoked some clutch but it will take anything you throw at it

hope that thing has a huge turbo to be able to move those wheels!

Re: (MooGoCow3)
Wow. I'm surprised a CRV can do that! You certainly aren't gonna be able to get over any real obstacles or climb something taller than a shopping cart, but it is indeed nice to see any SUV being used.
If you wanna lift it, I suggest finding springs and shocks from a heavier vehicle that also fit on the CRV. You'll have to guess for yourself on what works. Thats the best way to get an inexpensive lift. I run Land Cruiser and Tundra parts on my 4Runner and got over 3" of lift. But, get familiar with replacing your CVs if you take it offroad or turn the steering wheel more than 25*. I got some 31" Michelin tires I'd sell you.... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by MooGoCow3 »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">hope that thing has a huge turbo to be able to move those wheels!</TD></TR></TABLE> Old Samuri's have an anemic 1.3L or something that makes less than 100HP, and people put 33x10.50s on them with no problem. It won't be fast, but it's doable. ALWAYS put white letters in. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emhammer.gif Modified by JDMHN8 at 10:44 PM 6/13/2006 |
