Symptoms of a bad wheel bearing???

Ok, so well m car shakes violently at higher speeds, but still does some shaking at lower speeds as well. So when I was taking my dad to the airport last weekend(being the paranoid mechanic that he is) he is like how long has that shaking been going on? So I amlike about a couple of months...not only does it sahke, but it pulls to the left, and at very low sppeds the steeing wheel will turn to the left ever so slightly, and then turn to the right again, and repeat itself. Obviously it turns more to the lieft b/c I know I have an alignment problem there. My dad also said that it could be a bent axle. We did not have to to take the wheel off and look at it b/c he had to catch his flight back to DFW, so does this sound like a bad wheel bearing? Or could it be a bent axle, I know it isn't a broken axle b/c I do not hear any sort of popping sound when I turn my wheels. If not any of these, then what?

TIA https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

kinda sounds like a bent rim... hit any curbs lately?

PHOBIA 03-04-2005 07:20 AM

its not a wheel bearing, when a wheel bearing goes bad it sunds like a coffe can full of rocks and feels like a bad shopping cart when it seizes up.

i don't think it's a bent axle, you would have to have hit something or have a shit load of hp, to do anything like that to a stock axle. lol but it don't hear to check. if it's mostly coming from the left side then take a jack and jack up your car. Than remove the wheel, and spin the hub, if you hear any grinding or any nosie coming from the bear in the hub, then it's your hub, but it would have to be really F***ing bad to make the car shake that much, if that's not the prob. then check your shocks, and look for any leaking , also check all your ball joints make sure there still there and intac. and don't have any play, then check your axle, spin the hub and watch the axle spin, spin axle spin, if you noticed that it's bent, then replace it, O yeah but first of all (lol) check your tires in front they mite be out of balance, check for waves in the tire tread do to a bad shock or the tires not being balanced. if you check all this shit out you will find the prob. good luck my son and may the force be with you https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

I do know that the tires are probably out of balance, but unbalanced tires will do this high speeds, not low speeds and move my steering wheel left and right....sounds like there is alot of stuff I have to check, iti s going to be a long spring break https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif when the car is jacked up, put the jackstands underthe LCA's start the car with the wheel off and just let idle, or what?

Mine is doing this as well.
I'm thinking mine is a bad tire, or at least hoping!

As far as wheel bearing, when mine went bad it made a sound when it starting going bad. Especially when you went around corners it would make a grounding noise. When my buddies went out, his got so bad, that it sounded like a squealing shopping cart but louder.

.BigSexy 03-04-2005 09:52 AM

what am I supposed to look for when the car is up on jackstands the wheels are spinning?

white99gsr 03-04-2005 10:06 AM

Re: (egcoupe94)

look for tire seperation and possibly a bent axle. unless it's making a groaning sound (especially when turning) it's probably not a bearing issue.

you know, i had this same problem right after i got new wheels.
it turns out i didn't tighten the lug nuts all the way on my front left wheel. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emhammer.gif on me for almost losing an irreplaceable rim.

i dunno? maybe you pulled a "me" and didn't tighten your lugs. i doubt you would be as dumb, though. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

.BigSexy 03-04-2005 10:12 AM

a bent axle was one of the options my dad threw at me....but he only rode in the car for maybe say 20 minutes, and didnt look at it thoroughly at all.....what does a bent axle feel like?

beaterdriver 03-04-2005 10:15 AM

i had worn out bushings and my car would veer from left to right. also check your ball joints

.BigSexy 03-04-2005 10:23 AM

damn..i have so many possibilities, yet my dad wont be back in for another 2 weeks, this really sucks, i doubt i didnt tighten the lugs down enough, but hell, it doesnt hurt ot check

beaterdriver 03-04-2005 10:29 AM

its easy to check the bushings, just jack up the car and look under there to see if the rubber is worn down. mine were so bad i could move the lca around.

Re: (beaterdriver)

Damn man thats bad. Also, if you have a bad wheel bearing/hub, take the wheel off and see if the rotor has any play. Like move it back and forth with your hand and see if it moves. Ive had this happen a few times. I actually have the same problem your talking about and its really annoying and feels dangerous. Im in the process of just upgrading the entire front end with all new bushings, bearings, controls arms, shocks, the whole thing. HOPEFULLY, doing all that will fix my issues. Good luck.

well, if you take out those little screws that bolt the rotor to the hub, the rotor will move. once u put the wheel back on it will be fine tho.

easy way to see if your wheel bearing or possibly bushings or ball joint is to jack the car up and shake the wheel, it if has any free play something is not right

check CV joint, I've gone through like 6 of them, always the same symptoms. check if the boot is torn, that's a good sign that it's either gone or going to go soon. you'd need to replace the whole axel.

.BigSexy 03-04-2005 12:26 PM

i use the tabs to jack it up, but where should the jackstands go? i have always used the lca....and I recently changed the cv boot on the front passenger side but have checked the driverside

civtegra_hybrid 03-08-2005 07:58 AM

Re: (egcoupe94)

lol ok jack it up from the sub fram. (right there where the where the innter end of the lca meet's the sub.fram) and then use the jakes on the tabs. sorry about not explaining it. but the reason why you want the lca's to hang is cuz your going to need to check the play in the ball joint's, and if you have the jacks on the lca's you would not be able to tell if the ball joint's are bad. cuz they have pressure on them. hit me up when you check every thing on that list I gave you

.BigSexy 03-08-2005 02:13 PM

I will be checking this out later this week, I have been sick all week, and it has been cold as balls....ill keep everyone updated

bewsted 03-08-2005 02:22 PM

shaking i think it would be a bent rim also... the steering problem my be a tie rod end bad

Its not a wheel bearing... When mine went bad my car made a horrible noise and vibrated like crazy at slow and fast speeds

Re: (bewsted)

I have a similar problem. A squealing would come from both front wheels while the car is rolling at any speed. It would be even louder when in reverse. It would have the same sound when the car is jacked up and I spin the wheels manually.

wow i cant belive it took that long for somebody to say tierod end. the reason i think it might be taht is cause u said the steering wheel goes from left to right. check those first and get an alignment too. when u have th car jacked up haul on the wheel in every angle, up/down/left/right, if there is any play, u should be able to locate it. good luck

bewsted 03-08-2005 05:06 PM

Re: (chowmien)

that there sound like you brakes if its coming from both side and worse in reverse... does it stop when you are rolling and press on your brakes???
