STS Hatch Fuel pressure problems(about to burn car to ground)
 

Well Just built a STS car D16a6 Motor has 20 miles on it. Simple bolt on's. Car starts and runs great will run all day long. Car is quick going down the road as long as I am not turning.
It starts to spit and wants to die in hard turns mostly turning to the left, does it turning to the right but not as bad as turning to left.

So here is what I have done.......
Drove car till it wanted to die, when it started to die I killed it pulled the plugs, idea was to see if they were wet I have a spark problem or dry I have a fuel problem. Well they were dry, no fuel and the fuel pressure gage that is under the hood droped to 15psi in the corner.


Fuel Filter is new
Fuel pump relay is new.
1/2 tank of fuel

What about the regulator, fuel filter? I know it's simple stuff, but can sometimes be overlooked.

I originally wanted to say the pump was being starved, but I'm not sure if it's possible with 1/2 a tank; and if being starved, it wouldn't give a constant pressure, if it could even pump after cavitating.

Well it's obviously a fuel starve problem. My car has the same problem in left hand turns with less than 1/3 of a tank so my solution is to never let the tank go below 1/3 empty. I would check out the pickup for damage. I know that one generation of Civic had this problem, muh like DA Integras. My only suggestion is to try a non OEM fuel pump (Walbro?) or to try more baffles in the fuel tank.

Actually, yes. Many, many people have fuel starvation problems with '88-91 Civics.

Other than running a full tank of fuel as often as possible, I don't know of any real solution to the problem. http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif No other generation of Civic seems to have this problem. More baffling in the fuel tank would help I suppose.

You may also have other problems like a bad fuel pump or clogged line . . .

Try running a full tank and see if the car still starves in left turns.

Run at least 5/8 of a tank and then try to find that point where it doesn't starve. You won't see any STS 89-91 civics running less than 1/2 a tank because you experience exactly what you have.

So, if this is such a common problem, hasn't anyone come out with a tank that has better baffling? Or is the cause / fix to the problem not that simple?

A baffled fuel tank would not be legal in STS.

We ran my 91 with a 1/4 tank and our CSP now STS2 CRX with a little over 1/4.

We replaced the pump and filter in my car but the CRX is all stock in those reguards. Or just run more fuel...

Actually I've never had a starvation problem in my 91 as long as I run about 1/4 tank. If it gets to 1/8 I start worrying. Sounds like there is something else going on.

90-91 Si hatches don't need to run as much fuel as the 89 hatches. No idea why, but I can run 3/8 tank or less and not have starvation issues.

I ran my 91 to near empty on many occasions without a problem. I am building an 89 right now and you guys are getting my attention! If I have any problems, hopefully the 91 parts can be used to rectify.

If you're building an sts car no you cannot use 91 parts.

Correct, unless a certain part supercedes the 89 part (which does not in this case).

So if anyone sees an 89 running with less than 1/2 a tank or one that has a "broken" fuel gauge, they should throw papers.

Its strange, I jut parted out a 90 dx that I had a 2.2ltr b20 in that I ran in SM...with stock fuel pump. I never had a fuel problem I never ran that much fuel in the car..

I am kinda lost at this point....
I really dont want to start to throw parts at the car..

My 89 Civic STD starves in the corners (longer ones) or in slaloms with more than 6 cones on anything less than 5/8's of a tank. I ran full tanks for the last 2 years to combat sloshing and starvation.

I have now baffled the crap out of the tank, and even put little hinged trap doors on the sides of the bowl around the pump. I haven't installed the tank yet, but am really looking forward to loosing the 40-50lbs of excess fuel that this baffling will hopefully allow. I plan on trying to run 1/8 of a tank or less. There's a thread on here somewhere that has a bunch of pictures of someone who baffled an EVO8 tank. That's pretty much what I did, except for the little trap doors.

Oh, and before any of you plan on protesting me, this is an SM car. Would a surge tank be legal in STS? Thats another solution to the starvation problem.

I have a 91 CX and the thing used to starve at anything under 1/2 indicated by the gauge, which is actually more like 1/4 tank.

The car will be carb'd now with a low pressure/high volume (70GPH@4psi https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmileo.gif ) external fuel pump. I'm curious how this system will react. We'll find out soon enough. Otherwise we'll baffle the thing.

Is that the one from the 84-87 CRX? That motor was a beast! How easily will that go into the EF?

Yeah that's the one. It's in a little milder trim since the last time it blew up. CR south of 12:1 now instead of 13.5:1... Should still probably put down at least 180whp once tuned, according to Carl, which would be impressive for a n/a d-series. We shall soon find out...
