2 months past due for an oil change; is that bad

I was supposed to change my oil like about 2 months ago but I was unable to at the time because I did not have a job at the time. I planned to change it at 9/5/04.
My point is it bad that I have not done an oil change and can it hurt my engine?

Note: I have a leaky drain plug which I leak oil every now and then. I have to add more oil every 3 weeks. This week I am going to buy b-series oil pan and gasket;plus the oil.

Is this a correct fact: a mechanic at Motorsports in hayward told me , your supposed to change your drain plug every time you do an oil change, Because the drain plug looses its seal or thread.

He is a crackhead. If anything it doesn't hurt to change the plug washer with every oil change.

not changing your oil can hurt your engine, but in your case, 2 months overdue isn't that bad. Just don't go too long with out changing the oil https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

You have to change your oil ever 3000 miles. It's soo important. It's the lifeblood of your engine. If you don't like changing your oil often switch to synthetic if you still have under 100,000miles on your car. if you do this, drain your old oil completely, swap the filter. load up some synthetic, drive for 1000 miles then drain and put in new synthetic again. after that you'll only have to change your oil every 7000miles or so. I would still recommend changing every 3000 though, even though it's unnecessary.

On a brighter note:

It's not so much a question of time but milage. Judging by your question you have a newer car. Unless you have a brand new car whereby the first oil change is critical....(the sooner the better with new engine break in)...........Don't worry about it !!!!
To say 'You must- every 3k miles or so many months else damage occurs' is nonsense.

holycrap dude...
Change that ASAP, normal = 3000, stressing = 5000, stereotype bad women drivers.. 6-7000... you... 11,000.. that would be on the verge of downright dangerous I would think. But you add oil a lot.. so maybe not, but in any case... CHANGE

NO, this is not a correct fact. It's an extra precaution some places do. I know when i worked for Sears, they told us to replace the drain plug and gasket everytime. Usually I still wouldn't though becuase they hardly ever need to be replaced. There are TONS of people who probably have NEVER changed their plug before (and I personally have 2 cars I've never changed the plug on when I change the oil). Maybe every year or so it would be nice, but sometimes this leads to an idiot mechanic throwing an incorrect thread size into your oil pan, thus screwing up the threads and creating a leak.

It is bad you went past the oil change time, but honestly, don't worry about it much. What's done is done, and just change it asap. Oh yeah, and milage has more to do with it than time (unless you're talking about a stored car or something that you rarely drive).

I know a guy who didn't know he was supposed to change the oil in his VX hatchback. He put 120,000 miles on it before we found out and made him get it done. Looked like black clam chowder, but the engine was fine enough to still work. Honda https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif.

I would change it asap.

I change the washer, oil filter, and oil each time I do an oil change. No sense in changing the drain plug unless its stripped or cross threaded http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

Why would you recommend something if it's unnecessary? Sounds like you don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Anyways, if you run a good synthetic oil (Mobil 1, AMSOIL, Royal Purple, etc.) you can run 10-15k miles on one oil change. Make sure you have a filter that is rated for that much. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Deemeetree 11-16-2004 03:50 PM

Time isn't what you want to focus on, mileage is. How many miles did you place on your motor after the car was due. Normally, change every 3,000 miles. Most of the time, it will be A LOT sooner than what the tag tells you.

No, don't change your plug everytime. Run as fast as you can and kick the guy in the balls for saying that. All you need to do is change the plug washer everytime. Otherwise, it will leak.

Re: (Dimi)

you dont really have to change the drain plug but the seal is recommended.
(Honda usually sells honda oil filters and seal together.)

Re: (doublejz)

I forgot to mention that a I did do an oil change between the 53000 and the 64000 marker.

Cause that last time I did an oil change before 9/5 of this year was in june. So to the best estimate of where I was in as of mileage, it would have to be in june 55000 because; I bought the car in march. It had 52000 miles on it. So I was suppose to change my oil at 58000 in september. I do use Mobil 1 synthetic btw.
