Symtoms of a bad distributor cap and rotor?

Sorry, the search feature is down. Basically, what usually happens when you have a bad cap and rotor? Also, how often are they supposed to be changed?

i had my dizzy go on me on my way home one day... driving home from picking up my GF... my CEL light came on and then the car died like it ran out of gas... push the pedal down to the floor and the revs kept dropping... pulled over to the side of the road and called a tow truck because the car definetly wasnt going to start.. good thing it happend only 3 km away from my house after a 400 km road trip!

Hey Jethawk, that sounds EXACTLY like my problem. You replaced your cap and rotor and it was fine? Or you had to replace your whole dizzy? thanks let me know.

Every 30,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first inspect and replace, if necessary, the spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor

Check the outside for cracks and damage, then look inside it for cracks, carbon tracks and worn, burned or loose contacts.

Straight out of Haynes...

Well, ill go ahead and try the cap and rotor, and if that doesn't work. I have a d16y8 dizzy laying around. Is there anyway I can swap the guts outta the y8 into the z6 dizzy since the z6 and y8 dizzy's dont interchange?
