DIY: a mod your newborn could do

--> Stock civic airbox
--> short ram intake
--> 2.5"-3" pipe coupler
--> hack saw (parental guidence advised https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif )

Concept:
I decided to try to create this cai because 1. i sold my aem v2 to my brother 2. i didnt like the look of a short ram 3. i'll be putting on turbo soon so this is temporary 4. i was kinda interested in trying something out.
So now that we have the reason for attempting this, lets get down to what i did. I took a short ram intake and mated it to the stock civic airbox. I removed the resonator and the extended air inlet pipe.
My original idea was to create a heat barrier to allow separation from the engine bay (warm) air using a cut-n-half resonator box. Well, things didnt work out like i wanted them too, so i just did alittle custom-custom-custom. read below to find out what i did!

Procedures:

Step 1: I found my stock air box boxed away in my basement and thought up of an idea to create a cai. I assembled it and just thought about what i could use.

and i figured that if i cut the extended air inlet pipe and cut the resonator in half, i could make something pretty nice.

Step 2: In my Auto Tech class, I cut the extend pipe off and choped the resonator in half. Half ass cuts but that's pretty good for using a recipo saw, lol. I basically cut along the two side fathest away from the engine bay heat. I cut the extended pipe just below the pipeing going into the resonator.

Step 3: I removed the bumper of my car just to get a good look of how the new intake setup would fit and look like. I think it looks pretty delicious. what do you think?

But one probelm that i found what that the pipe going into the resonator is quiet small in diameter. I think it's about 2" https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif Do i really want my engine to be sucking air from a 2" hole? this is about where i changed my plans.

Step 4: I went ahead and bought some spray paint from Advanced Auto Parts, also had some paint left over from other projects. I used the extended pipe as a test material for painting the stock air box. I had Black Auto trim paint, Black Krylon Fusion and Design Master Glossy Black. Here's a pic of what each looked like... i sprayed alittle in front of each can, but you cant really see a diff in this pic.

I ended choosing the Krylon Fusion because it's meant to be strong paint for plastics... here's some results

Also i painted my short ram with Dulicolor High Performance Rim paint. I choose gunmetal just cus that's a nice color in my opinion. I think it looks a ton better then before...

Step 5: Next step was to hack away at the short ram, like it's not already short enough! I kinda set it up everything like it would go in, so i could get some quick measurments as to where i cuting the pipe too.

I only had to cut about 3-4" inches off i'd say. The cheap aluminum of the intake pipe made it easy to cut with a hack saw as well. * be safe children https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif *

Step 6: Installation is near! Once i had the pipe cut to length, it was time to start to install this mutation of a intake. Since i gave up on the whole resonator cut-n-half idea, i just decided that if the airbox inlet hole lines up close enough to the hole in the chasis, it'd still be sucking colder air. I sealed the gasket thats in the stock set up with silcon in an attempt to make a tighter fit. Didnt work to well, but it still will suck some nice air.
Next probelm to sovle was how to connect the short ram to the air box? well after looking at local auto parts stores and failing to find a pipe coupler, i went to Home Depot. They had various sizes in the plumbing section of the store. The closest to 2.5" was either 2" (too small) or 3"(too big). so of course i took the 3" and made it work. A little tighting made it fit nicely.

The pipe couple however touched a wire harness bracket so the box was out of position. This made me have to ghetto rig the box on with black zip ties. One is ziped to the stock bracket and another is ziped to the fuze bracket. Then the only thing left to do was to install the short ram air pipe again!

Conclusion: I think it turned out looking pretty good. I think it's deff better then the look of the short ram air intake https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif But im not sure if it's better then the aem v2 i had ...

I think it does sound pretty cool, kinda high pitched but at the same time deep intake sound. overall, i'd say it's a nice thing to do if you have a short ram and cant afford the expensive cai's out there. Im still trying to think of a way to use my cut in half resonator tho... back to the drawing board guys!!!

Thats pretty much like ripping off the resonator in the stock intake system, which is what I did in my G2 Integra and my Civic before I boosted it. The only difference is that you are using an aluminum short ram pipe vs. the stock rubber intake tube.

haha lil lil lil lil duct tape and a scavenger hunt in my basement for a tarp did the job :D

Im still a little confused. How and from where is the cold air coming from?

the stock air box inlet pipe sits right where the whole cut out of the chasis is. If the whole air system was in place, there would be a pipe connecting there and going to a resonator and acutal air inlet. So basically, the air box is cut off where the resonator/inlet pipe connects. it's sucking up air from the same area a cai filter would sit.

well, i've only got a single lane drive way with a single garage door. There was all kinds of shit packed up becuase were moving in 8 days, plus my mom's car was all up in the mix.

it was easier to make a personal custom garage lol

i remember seeing your original post, but no.. i didnt read father down where it gives this idea. I got the idea from a friend with an integra.
po' man's comptech ice box. but with an integra it's alot easier. The extended air inlet actually goes THROUGH the resonator, so when you cut it.. you already have my idea made...
