i used the duplicolor high heat 500 with no primer and did a few coats from about 10 - 12 inches away so the paint begins to dry a bit before hitting the valve cover giving it the wrinkle look even without being an actual "wrinkle" paint and it came out great

I use the same paint that I spray cars with. The cover dosen't get that hot so you can use whatever paint you want. As far as the wrinkle paint, I use Krylon wrinkle finish. You can find it at almost any parts store.

So, i think I'm gonna go with the black wrinkle finish paint and then paint over that with regular blue paint since i can't find wrinkle blue. Does anyone know what color blue matches the closest

Re: (SiRLasVegaS)
I have used the black with great success. Put some heat on them while they dry to get best results.

home depot, lowes and pep boys will not have it try online or a mom and pop place. it's called vht wrinkle plus amazon.com def. has it.
does anyone know what's best to use to mask off the HONDA DOHC VTEC writing on the valve cover so that it doesn't get sprayed?

You can tell you covered a dark color with the red, its definitely not as bright.
You can do a few things, first look into VHT wrinkle paints a blue color should be available. If not, they have wrinkle primer, spray it on and lightly spray a blue color onto the wrinkle primer.
Also to get the letters right you can do two things, cover them with vaseline, chap stick or something oily so that when the paint dries it doesnt stick to the letters. Or you can just sand the paint off the letters. Also, to mask the spark plug wire crowns, head stud openings, place tape on them and trim with an exact-o knife.
Ive used the red on previous h22 covers and came out awesome. This is the stuff you want.
