Default spraying single stage pearl

lo all.

i place my paint order for my pearl base and primer/clear on friday and i was just looking for some tips really.
some one said to keep the coats thin so it all lays flat and to keep the fan spray fairly wide, its a very dark paint (rootbeer) so i am guessing as long as i overlap with thin coats i wont have any problems?

also im spraying the front/rear bumper, fenders off the car, will i need to shoot those at the same time or will i get away with spraying those later? the paint being a single stage will come premixed with all the pigments etc,

thanks

when you spray the panels off the car, position them like if they were on. so your fenders, hang them so they are vertical and your hood horizontal. that way the pearl/metallic lays down the same

Single stage paints are a major PITA especially any metallic or pearl single stage. I hope you are using a very good spray gun because if not you will have some serious splotches in the pearl. Use higher pressure for your last coat as if you were spraying clear coat. It helps get a much smoother finish.

if your not using a high quality paint and spray system, you might have a problem with matching. Spraying them at a seperate time even with a slight variation in conditions can change the color, thats just the nature of cheaper paints, not sure what you are using im just letting you know. LIke 99 sedan said, if your not used to spraying single stage metallic/pearl effect your in for some surprises. They can be a pain in the *** if your new at it, i personally only spray single stage solids just cause i dont agree with metallic or pearl effect single stage paints and the way they spray. Just take your time with them and for the love of god dont run it, or youll be doing the whole panel over again. Its nearly impossible to sand and buff out single stage metallic and not ruin it. I really dont know why the majority of people on this site opt to use single stage, spraying base/clear may take a bit longer, but its way easier to make base lay good, lay your clear down and then sand and buff to make it bling if you need to rather than taking your chances with single stage. Either way good luck.

Oh, well your TITLE says SINGLE STAGE that why we were talking about that.

Single stage is exactly that, you spray it on, your done. No clear. Its reduced and then uses an activator to harden the material. It lays wet and shiny in one coat. thus people think its easier to spray, which i think is totally untrue for beginners because of how easy it is to run, and if you dont have a good spray booth it can get very dirty.

Base/clear is what your talking about. Basecoat and then activated clearcoat over top of that base. Base is alot easier to spray, dries faster, alot harder to run and of course with clearcoat you can lay it on nice and wet and if theres dirt or runs you can usually get that taken care of with a block and a buffer.

When you said single stage pearl that was taken literally. that you were spraying a single stage urethane pearl effect paint. True pearls are 3 stage paints, base.pearl midcoat and then clearcoat. So when you said single stage we figured it was just that, I didnt even think that you were just spraying a basecoat metallic/pearl effect. Because of your title I literally thought you were spraying a single stage pearl effect paint that would need to be reduced and activated, cause thats what most people on this board are used to seeing when people talk about single stage paint. I think you are going the right way, i hate single stage.

However, single stage paint laid nicely in a good paint booth, loaded with 2 nice coats of good quality clearcoat = BUTTER.

^Yea anyone who read the title would think he was spraying single stage, simply because it says, SINGLE STAGE. So OP, you're spraying a tri coat pearl or a base coat clearcoat?

it sounds like hes spraying a base/clear. Basecoat prolly just loaded up with base pearl effect. ive sprayed alot of colors with the base pearl, you can tell its not a true pearl midcoat but still looks pretty good, just dont get that deep pearl look like you would with 5 coats of midcoat.

yes sorry the paint guys called it a single stage not a dual one because its pre-mixed and not going on over a silver base (like a candy) which is then cleared.

will 3 liters of color (without thinners pre-added) be enough to shoot the outside of a crx? (not bonnet or roof as they are carbon) its really just the roof/sides and front + rear mugen bumpers

a gallon of 2k clear will be ok to cover in a few coats of clear right?

also are devilbiss guns any good? they do a entry model for $200 that seems within my budget (1.4mm needle etc), i can get air line and the regulator/moisture trap for cheap and the compressor is a huge snap-on twin electric unit with an enormous tank (wont fit in the crx length ways with no passenger seat!!) so easily fills the cfm/psi requirements. its the paint and gun i am short of at the moment.
i just dont want to run out half way through the job and dont want a gun thats going to fail in the most epic way possible half way through spraying lol!

dont get a junk gun. Gal of clear is plenty. 3 liters or color should be enough depending on how good it covers. Make sure the CFM over your aircomp at 90Psi is at least 10cfm
