removing roof skin at the junkyard.
so yes, i know if i ask them they will come with a sawzall and cut the roof rails and give me the whole thing.
the junkyard i use usually gives me ridiculously low prices if i remove the parts myself.
i am thinking about replacing my roof skin on my 94 accord wagon. the one i have now has 3 issues. its rusting by the windsheild, it has a bad/leaky aftermarket sun roof and i just recently fount a small random hole that looks like it may have been filled in at some point.
i would think a sawzall would be too ruff to cut out the roof skin from the rail rails. what do people usually use when going to remove factory panels
ill bring my drill and spot weld cutters
will this bad boy do the job with a nice fine metal blade

I would cut it at the pillars and bring it home and take your time drilling out the spot-welds, that is what I am in the process of doing, but haven't had time yet to finish.
I have done the same for a radiator support and it worked out well.
I would suggest cutting it like this.

I am just doing the skin. Are you going to weld it back on? You can use panel adhesive that is distributed by 3m that is meant for this type of job, as well as others.

nah i am going to weld it there the black strips are, cand down the welds and replace the strips so it looks seamless. i might use some adheasive in the front and rear, but the sides will def be welded.

Adhesives are just as tough as welds are these days. Either way you will have to cut it off similar to the pic.

I would cut it off at the pillars and take it home for the following reasons: who wants to sit in a salvage yard all day drilling welds and cutting with battery powered tools? next even if you do get it off before sunset I wouldnt trust transporting it anywhere with out damage because theres no structural support holding the skin. Best to get it in your garage and do it in a safe comfortable easy environment. my .02

you have to strip the car and you can see spot welds then drill them all out 1/8 first then 1/4 and u should be able to break the welds and just remove the skin i have never done a roof but have done box sides on trucks and door skins

metal bond is ideal for roof skins. make sure you cut all the seam sealer off the cross member beams before you take the roof off.

You wont be able to get a wire wheel/brush in there. I believe he is referring to the horizontal support that is in the middle of the roof. I'd suggest a long sawzall blade.
Also think about how the roof is going to channel rain water before you make it seamless.

slip a putty knife in between the beam and the roof skin. take your time and make sure you get all the beams. you just need to cut the sealer not remove it. this will help it come off easier without a dent being pulled in the panel.

i am not going to make it seam less. i am just going to do the cutting/welding under the plack strip so i can cuver the surgery marks with the strips. it will still have the same setup as factory

i went today to the junkyard to look at the wagon roof again. its was pretty good. i am going to cut it out on Monday. i removed the rain shields and i can see the spot weld holes. so removing to the top skin from the frame i cut out will be pretty easy.

And i would stay away from harbor freight power/battery tools. I would go out and buy a inexpensive Ryobi tool set, and get yourself the 18V Jabsaw/Sawzaw

i got my heat gun, hammer, chisle, drill, and a couple spot weld bits ready. i also got my windsheild/side glass removal tool if needed. i am going to try to take the skin off there. ill take the sun roof off first, so there will be no weight on the skin.

i would take the roof top, this way the skin isn't so flimsy and damageable. they shouldn't charge more for a roof skin or the roof.
