Icon2 Painting my wheel inserts

There are plenty of tips and tricks on painting wheels. I've done that. Are there any additional tips and tricks on painting wheel inserts?

The OEM is gray, I like them to be black. Thinking of using plastic dip. The only method I can think of is the tape and mask it well, the polished parts.

Are there some tips and tricks I'm missing? Please share. TIA

Use an exacto knife and tape. Just cover the entire polished portion in tape and then come back and clean it up with the knife. Probably best to take the wheel off of the car and do this on a bench or desk. After that, mask the wheel and paint away. I'd suggest plastidip, due to the nature of it being removable.

There is liquid masking fluid out there. I've use it on smaller projects. Not sure how it would fair on something this size. May be worth looking into.

Thanks. I guess there is no "easy" way. Yes, Tape up and knife to clean up.

Just use the nice edges on the side of the tape, exacto knife done incorrectly can damage the sub layer of paint. Being this guy is new to masking so I would rec. that he just takes his time to mask just making sure to follow the edge of the tape to get your nice lines. If you use plasti dip in the rattle can spray your first coat to about 80% coverage (almost like see through) then let stand for about 45 seconds then spray again and let sit about 45 seconds and keep doing the same for each coat. The rattle can stuff I have noticed you want about 5 coats and might want to clean the nozzle after each use. Make sure to remove making tape quickly around where you want clean lines at cause the rattle can stuff sets up quickly. For large areas of masking use masking paper so you don't have to use as much tape. Getting the masking paper and tape at places like home depot, they have plasti dip there too.

Still debating. Grey is very similar to black. I'm not sure if all this work will really give me that satisfactory feeling.

FYI. OEM is gray. Honda accessory wheel is black. I do like black better. No, not paying $1300 for the same wheel of a different color.

Ya that would be pointless to pay that much, you could take them to a autobody shop and have them painted to look the same for 400-600 and it would be pretty much the same, if not better.

Where are you located at? if you don't mind me asking

Wax and grease remover is like $6 (<1 needed)
Plastidip is $6 a can (2-4 cans needed)

Looking at $20-40 to do that. Glossifier is extra. But you'd definitely come away sub $100 with the look you currently desire. It will last 3 years no problem and is completely removable at any time.
