Default Omni paint mixing question.

Planning to paint my car soon in the backyard with PPG Omni Base, MC 161 urethane clear with hardener, and 2k Urethane surfacer w/primer hardener. If anyone has use the omni line before, what kind of hardener do you use for the primer and clear? The fast one, medium, or slow? Also, should I reduce the basecoat? Because, the tech sheet didn't specify whether I should reduce it or not. Thanks.

I use MH167 for the clear (fast hardner) and MH165 for the urethane surfacer.

Both dry quick and set up in a couple hours.

MC161 (2 parts) - MH167 (1 part) ----- Mix ratio

MP182 (5 parts) - MH165 (1 part) ----- Mix ratio

Enjoy! You'll like that clear, it lays out really nice. Spray out two wet coats or three if you're wetsanding. Wetsand the next day with 1500 and buff out to a shine.

I'd stay away from Omni clear, that junk will peel off in sheets after few months

im gonna have to say that i disagree. my car has omni on it (although i will be repainting it soon with something else) and it has held up well for about 2 years and it doesnt have any signs of peeling, flaking, chipping etc. if its peeling off in sheets it sounds to me like the car wasnt prepped properly.

to the OP, i wouldnt recommend painting ur car in ur backyard though. i would say try to find a shop that might let u rent their booth or something. if u decide to paint it in ur back yard, have fun sanding and buffing to get trash out of the paint.

Wow talk about misinformation. It's all in the prep work. If you shot it ugly, granted it's gonna peel off. If you do it right, it'll last awhile.

LOL, I've been in auto body and paint industry for almost 18 years ,nothing is halfassed in my shop, done numberous cars that were featured in magazines world wide, so I think I know how to prep, which has nothing to do in adhesion between Matrix or Valspar and especially DuPont base and Omni clear, as I stated in my previous post, the Omni clear will peel off in huge sheets, it also has no UV protectant in it, PM X-1 on here and ask him how many cars he had to re-do because of that shitty clear

here are few pics of my work

The hotter it gets the slower the reducer you will use. I you use the fast reducer and it's hot out the paint will come out of your gun in a dry mist.

GREAT work man, and I did see a car on here, a red civic that was pealing, and I had never seen that before.

The omni paint and clear line is the bottom of the line when it comes to the PPG line........Spend some money on the clear Its what makes the paint look good.Plus its the UV barrier for your paint.I like the F9325 fleet clear(made for fire trucks)It will go on in 1 coat at 3.9 mils and dry to 2 mils.We did a test on it at work.I laid 3 very wet coats on a fender and let it sit outside in the weather for 4 mnths...It went from(1 day after being done)9.4 mils to at the end of the 4 mnths being 8.9 mils.We then cut and buffed it and it was like butter.this clear is around $200...

Thanks for the info guys, I'll prob stick with the omni line since it cheap and affordable. I ain't trying to paint no show car whatsoever. This is for the learning experience and a lot of people at autobody101.com seem to recommend it, so ye Imma just stick with it.

I disagree with the fact stated about omni clear pealing off. I have used Omni clear quite a few times on jobs that request a very cost effective repair. Sure...the UV inhibitors in it are non existing and the sh*t will chip very easy, but I havent ever had a problem with it pealing. I deffinatly wouldnt recommend it, by any means, but, it isnt terrible stuff. As a matter of fact, with time spent on cutting and buffing, I am convinced it will get just as good of a shine as any other clear, just dont plan on it lasting forever. Myself I use PPG concept clears or DC4000 for the more money invested jobs. Cant go wrong with the 25 dollar sprayable quart of clear!

mc161 is a great cheap clear. It does have UV protection. It will not peel off if good hardner is used (hardner exposed to oxygen is not a good idea spray some bloxygen in the container before you cap it to get some more shelf life out of it).

Delamination is caused by a number of things; spoiled hardner, improper flash time after the bc, bad batch, etc.

I've used mc161 on alot of high end jobs, it sprays great, sands/buffs easily, and is very cheap.

Regardless of the temperature I use a slow hardner with my mc161. This alows the clear to really flow when it gets on the panels and lays down like glass. Add up to 10% slow reducer, move fast and it will flow even better.
