How much would it cost to repaint my entire 99 Si, at shop rate, if:

1) I wanted to have it painted a different factory color (i.e. electron blue, and I would need the underside of everything painted, such as under the hood, etc.)?

2) I wanted to have it painted the factory color (and only want the outside of the car painted)?

Again, looking for what it would cost at typical shop rates for decent quality work (i.e. want it to look like it did coming out of the factory, nothing more, nothing less).

Would depend on who you go to and the quality you want. You can go to Macco and get a crap paint job for cheap or you can go to a good shop and get an awesome paint job for 4000+. Go to some shops in your area and get some estimates.

If your car is worth anything to you, I would spend the extra and get a good quality paint job. It will do your car justice in the long run, and if you ever decide to sell it.

Painting the inside of the hood and stuff is up to you, but I would. It looks pretty silly/cheap to pop the hood of your EBP Si and have a milano red engine bay or something. I got a really nice paint job on my EJ6 for about $1200, seems like that was a pretty good deal compared to what most people pay. It was only the outside though, factory milano red color. Maaco is like $3-600, it usually looks alright when people do there own prep work, not great at all though.

So is that $1200K just to paint the outside (e.g. if I keep the factory color where there is no need to paint things like under the hood) and $3-4K if I were to paint it a different color where I would also need the underside of everything painted?

I paid $1,500 to get my car painted. They got me a new oem hood and painted the underside of it too. They painted all outside but not the door jams. I kept my OEM color so there was no need. They also fixed the 1/4 rust and dings all over the car. Great quality and very worth the money. My buddy painted his hatch too in the same place with great quality too and paid $1,000 but he didn't have rust. Good luck.

$2000-ish is about what you should be paying for a high quality outside-only paint job in the OEM color. It's reasonable to expect some dings and dents to be repaired for that price, but definitely not tons of body work.

To spray the same quality job in a different color but also doing the jambs and underhood, expect $3000+ To do the jambs and underhood areas takes a lot of tear down and reassembly time. Add a tri-coat pearl color or a significant amount of body work and the price will definitely go up quickly.

To simply say "you get what you pay for" is an understatement. When a shop or individual is charging under $2000 for an overall paint job, I'd be very leery about what kind of quality you're going to get. Also, maybe the most important part of the whole deal is a warranty. Are you covered for the life of the car for $1200-1500? Probably not.

True. I've never heard of paint warranty though. My painter told me that the paint should last pretty good for about 8-10 years at least depending on how I tale care of it an if I drive it in the snow or not. 3 or 4k is a lot to pay for a paintjob. I'd rather get 2 paintjobs in 20 years than have 20 year old paint. For 3-4 k you can get 2 paintjobs. If he wants to do a full color change then by all means so it but for an oem respray 4k is a lot. It depends a lot on what you're getting an the quality. I'm just saying you should be satisfied for 1,5-2k ish. Insurance sure as he'll isn't going to give you crap for it if it gets into an accident.
