Civic Paint Issues
The paint on my roof is really faded, oxidized and the clear coat is coming off. I took it to a body shop and they said the paint needed to be striped down to bare metal so it doesn't do the same thing again with new paint. My question is does it really need to go down that far or is down to old primer ok? The clear coat on most of the rest of the car that gets direct sunlight is peeling off too, how far down do I need to sand before repainting these parts? Thanks for the help.

Re: Civic Paint Issues
The paint on my 91 accord looks just like this. I'd also like to know how far it needs sanded down before repainting. I definitely need to get somethin done fast to my car because once my paint started doing this it really started to go fast.

Re: Civic Paint Issues
It depends on exactly what problems are occurring. From the look of the photo, it's just the clear coming off of the color. The far side of the roof shows some orange color in the pic but I'd guess that's just the lighting. If the only problem is that the clear is coming off, the E-coat should most definately be kept. The E-coat is electrodeposition primer used by auto manufacturers and it is the strongest barrier against corrosion in the painting industry. Since the color coat has been exposed to the environment for so long, at least its surface needs to be sanded off before any coatings are applied. Personally, I'd sand the color just till you start to see the E-coat. If you don't know already, you'll want a body or paint guy to determine which, if any, parts have been refinished in the past. If the problems are only in areas that have been repainted, then other areas may not require as much prep work.
