Default $38 paintjob. House paint/House sprayer

I was just going to spray paint Jakes car like last year, but the cost of spray paint and that I paint houses everyday, I thought of something. I hit up my people at Sherwin Williams, and they donated a gallon of All Surface oil based Enamel. Usually for painting outside stair railings and that type of stuff. The color is SW7019 Gauntlet Gray, in low luster.

Car arrives

To start, I masked everything off super good using just my regular 2" masking tape, and .31 mil plastic.

I masked the portion of wall around stuff I care about while I did the sanding, but I didn't put my final floor plastic down during sanding so dust wasn't all in my **** while spraying.

I went over the whole car with an electric DA sander, with around 330-400 grit. I don't remember. Then I went over the whole thing with a light scotchbrite pad. This is a track car, with blemishes, but the sanding was just to remove anything that wasn't already adhered to the car well, as well as kinda smoothing things.

After the sanding, I pulled the car out, put down my 3 mil floor plastic, aired the car off outside and brought it back in. Then I wiped the whole thing down with acetone.

From there, it's go time. Loaded up the paint in my Graco 390 airless paint sprayer, tested settings on the wall plastic, and blasted it.

Sprayer set up in the downstairs bathroom

Now, this paint takes a long time to dry. I figure at 24 hours I'll think about touching it. We went and ate some 99 cent hamburgers (add it to the $38 if you're being picky), and came back. By that time the paint was nowhere near dry, but just tacky enough to carefully pull the masking. I don't want to wait until the paint has cured, or the paint can bond the tape I'm pulling with the paint on the car, and with our super prep job, it was just better to pull the tape while the paint was still tacky.

And, we finally got it back outside. Paint still curing. Front bumper painted separate.

All in all, I'd call it a win. Up close the car has a pretty good amount of orange peel, but it's a track car, and every picture of it has always been from 20 ft away.

The car, as it was all last year.

Pretty darn good for a track car. When I first read the title I thought it was going to be some street car with Home Depot latex paint

if it has orange peel, u should spray a couple of coats on it, and wet sand and buff the **** out of it, single stage paint can still be wet sanded and buffed for that smooth finish, but it looks good for 38$.

i just think if ur doing it, why not go that little extra cause people who matter will notice. whether its fast as **** or not, it also has to look professional, no sponsor wants their name on a OK looking car track or not. Thats just how i look at it man.

I thought the same thing. I can't stand when people do that to a DD.

I noticed that too. It just adds a little character lol. I circle track cars and this is 1000% better than my paint jobs. Looks great.
