Re: The "$50 Paint Job" Thread
I rattle canned my CRX for around $65 using Krylon indoor/outdoor satin and it came out great. People would ask me where it was painted all the time.
Ended up painting my Jeep the same color. Then painted my brothers Nissan flat black using the same brand of paint.
Hell even my 04 Ninja 636 in spray painted semi-gloss orange.
Its all in the prep work and painting in a cool, shaded and dust free area.

how to remove the mirrors, molding, emblems & lights
I'm hand sanding my car with 220 grit, rubber block, will be priming twice with rustoleum metal primer and have a few questions.
1) how do you remove the side mirrors, side molding, emblems, brake and head lights?
2) does the paint all have to be dull and all the shiny spots completely removed?
3) how do you sand the door handles?

1) Assuming its the same car as your avatar, remove the trim peice on the inside of the mirror, top of the door, there is 1 clip and it will pop out. remove 3 8mm bolts and remove the mirror.
2) before clear or after?
3) Sand them with a finer grit

removing things for painting
Thanks very much.
Yes, 99 honda civic ex coupe. I'm pretty sure all the clear is off, except in the crevices.
I removed the emblems with a heat lamp and knife.
I'm going to leave on the molding, and tape around the mirrors and lights, as they are more complicated to remove.
mirror removal :55 to 4:15 / 14:44 to 17:30

primer & odorless spirits
The sanding and taping took longer than expected.
I put on the first coat of primer today, mixed 2:1 with odorless mineral spirits, as that's the only kind available in California. The second cup wasn't going on very well, so I added more spirits in about a 1:1 ratio.
Would unthinned marine enamel go on any better, or would it have the same issues and take forever to dry?

Love these $50 paint jobs! I did the roll-on method ona spare hood, using Rustoelum Topside (marine), and ti came out great. I think for the rest of the car, I'll spray it.
I'll try to dig through all 266 pages and post up some pics of my own.
Just an FYI, the Topside paint has a bit of UV protection built in, which doesn't hurt. It's a bit more than the regular Rustoleum, but well within the budget for this kind of project.

depends on how you take care of it. my car was painted for 3 years. cleared it after the 1 year and it still shined great. (cut and buffed / sealed) 3 years then i sold the car.
i just painted this car 2 weeks ago for my buddy. its a track car and the rustoleum was a good choice in his opinion. sunrise red. no cut or buff, shot with a hf gun 80/20 mix

Re: The "$50 Paint Job" Thread
I've had my 97 HX about 3 years and now I'm starting to modify it (have more time now). I used Plasti Dip on my wife's xB and now on my civic. Best thing about Plasti Dip is much less prep time and it's removable. Once you learn the tips and tricks for it you can get great results. On my civic I tried something new, on the top layer I'll spray a small section and wait a few seconds as it starts to dry/thicken and I took a 3" brush and put a random direction brush texture.
Top of trunk and roof is like this
Plasti Dipped HX rims vintage gold
Just today I did side skirts black(no brush design). No pic yet.
Plan on doing all emblems same gold as rims. Doing hood same as roof/trunk. Rest of car matte red and maybe with a light spray of gold metallizer, maybe not. I'll see if I like the plain matte red.
I guess my car is now an art project! Also will lower car around 1.5 inches.

This is exactly why i only buy honda's that are stock and havent been touched. I do paint a body for a living. When we get a modified honda like this, we have the strip all of this shitty paint off to get a good professional finish.
I dont understand how you're "cutting and buffing" a aerosol can paint, theirs no hardener in it.
as for the people spraying with a gun, are you sure youre not just using urathane based paint, because that stuffs cheap and still lays out a decent job, times have just changed to solvent and now water based paint for environmental reasons.

Just saying, there is a time and place for everything and these cheap paint jobs are not being done to mint Hondas.

Re: The "$50 Paint Job" Thread
4 coats into doing mine. Wet sanded after the first coat 600 grit. Then 1000 after the second. 1500 after 3rd and 4th but still orange peel after each new coat. The paint seems thick enough to make me want to stop painting. My plan is, in a couple weeks, to wet sand 1500 then 2000 to get rid of the latest coat of orange peel then cut and polish. Should i bother with a fifth coat? If i'm not getting good results I suppose i can scuff and keep going. The roller strokes are evident until wet sanding. Hard to tell when to stop painting and polish it off. Any advice appreciated.
