Default 2001 CRV check engine light trouble codes

Can anyone help me translate a check engine light code I got (83) when I shorted the jumper on the service connector of my 2001 CRV? I had Auto Zone pull the code but did not write them down. They told me I had a misfire on #1,#2, and #4 cylinders. I replaced the spark plugs and wires but still getting CEL. Thanks

Uh oh. this may be bad.
Replace the spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. and pray the misfire goes away.
If not you will have to remove the head and get the valves re-seated.

/\ if you do this /\ only use honda OEM stuff!!! I have more people that come in with misfire issues than I can count that put non OEM ignition parts on! Just so you are aware the 1st gen CRV's have issues with the heads and this causes misfires as well. You can do a compression test, and or check to see if you exhaust valves a SUPER tight! If they are then you probably have a bad head!

good catch I'm so used to doing it I forget to remind people to use OEM parts.
ALWAYS use OEM ignition parts!

Thanks for all the information. Yesterday I reset the CEL then as I started the car I noticed that it was blinking (can't remember how many times) then it stayed on. Drove to the store and when I started the engine again, no CEL. hmmmm Kind of strange. Today same thing. When I started the car in the morning CEL was blinking again and stayed on. This time I turned off the ignition and restarted with no CEL. Could the cold spell we are having in CA cause this problem? The car is in the garage but the overnight temps are in the 30s. The car has been running normal the entire time the CEL was on.

When it's blinking do you notice it's vibrating more than usual?

Just a little, but that happens to my 98 Civic when it is really cold. Will check with the wife to see if it happened again today.

a flashing check engine light usually means a hard mis-fire

What's a hard mis-fire? I never heard that term before. Anyways, it happened again today according to the wife. CEL was on every time she started the car. So I changed out the cap and rotor and will see what happens tomorrow. If it's comes on again then I guess it is off to the shop it goes to have the valves checked.

as in not intermittent, it's always happening.
Does it accelerate smoothly or does it feel like it's "chugging"?

Started up the car this morning and the CEL didn't come on until after about 2 minutes. It started blinking then stopped and was a solid light. Was hoping that it was one of the ignition parts that was causing the problem but I guess it is something bigger.

Light went off last night but turned on again this afternoon. Brought it in to the mechanic this morning and he pulled the codes. Misfire on cylinders #1 and #4 but no light on. He's not sure what it could be.

Do as we said first and replace the spark plugs and wires. Then if the problem still persists do a leakdown test

Adjust the valves if problem persists then you would have to replace the head since the valve seats have receded. stop wasting your money on ignition parts that will not get you no where.

where in CA are you located???

I've never replaced the head. That's a waste of money

Now that's a WASTE OF MONEY slapping parts till you find the problem way to go.

BTW when I mean replace the head was not for the customer to pay for the head, Honda will Usually Goodwill for this type of problem.

misfire on CRV usually caused by vales being to tight never been adjusted at 60k mark...have them adjusted and go from there...if problem still there have a leak down test done...will either have vales burn/crakded or chip or vales seat will be bad...

I had a tuneup at 60K, but will check the valve clearance tomorrow.

If I need the head replaced, how do I go about explaining to Honda since my warranty expired already.

If honda won't cover it under warranty do not replace the head. All you have to do is re-seat the valves. I do it for about $400

Problem resolved. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Turn out to be tight exhaust valves. I adjusted them and the light turned off and the car runs super smooth now. Thought my mechanic adjusted the valves at 60K, but he was following Honda's recommended service interval of adjusting valves at 105K. I informed of the find and he will make note of it for future reference since his friend at Honda says they still adjust valves every 30K.

I have a 99 crv 160,000 miles receeded valves. Honda only offering 50% coverage for repairs. Always had it serviced. I would appreciate any advice.
