How to Disable Daytime Running Lights in 2016 Accord ?

In earlier models (2007 - 2015) of the Honda Accord, people would disable the daytime running lights by simply pulling the, "DRL fuse".

A "sales guy" at a Honda dealer told me that when you do this on a 2016 Accord, a warning indicator comes up on the dash. Sometimes car salesmen don't give accurate information. I'm wondering if someone out there has actually tried this?

Why would you want to disable them?

I am considering the purchase of a new 2016 Honda Accord. I do not want to buy it if the daytime running lights are difficult to disconnect. They were easy to disconnect on my current Accord (pull the DRL fuse).

This is why I am hoping to find someone that has actually tried this before I make my purchase. As you can imagine, returning a car is not as easy as an Amazon prime return.

I prefer the Accord, but when I visit a Toyota or Hyundai showroom they are quick to point out the "DRL OFF" on the light switch.

I'm curious if any warnings pop up on the dash, or any other types of computer "warnings" occur when the DRL fuse is pulled.

I'm curious, why the importance on disabling the DRLs? You're willing to switch to another brand entirely just because they have an easier way to turn off your headlights?

On a side note, I have an '07 Fit and the DRL relay/module started to go on the fritz about 2 years ago. The lights were flickering and doing weird stuff. I took out the module to inspect it for cracked solder joints but never re-installed it. No warning lights, no issues and no DRLs anymore. I'd prefer to have functioning DRLs but it doesn't bother me too much anymore.

Basically, I like to control what my car does. I'm opposed to the idea of programmers in Tokyo or Detroit making driving decisions for me. There are a variety of circumstances that make it desirable to turn off all lights. Maneuvering at the very well lit drive-in burger joint, drive-in movies, waiting outside at night for someone.

On one occasion, I was in a rented Chevy at a drive-in movie. I was threatened physically, because of my inability to turn off the daytime running lights. (Admittedly, General Motors is the worst on this.)

Lexus, Toyota, and Hyundai have "DRL OFF" on the light switch. Mazda, Chrysler and Ford allow daytime running lights to be disabled via dealer programming. General Motors intentionally makes it difficult to disable their daytime running lights. Often using the main headlights as DRL. (GM dealers will disable them for government purchases only. Indeed, the police department in the large city where I live drive Chevy Tahoe's with the daytime running lights disabled.)

I have owned many Honda's, and been very happy with ALL of them. I am also considering a Toyota Avalon, (has "DRL OFF"). Hyundai (has "DRL OFF") is also tempting because they do NOT prevent the PASSENGER from operating the navigation system while the vehicle is in motion.

ALL 2016 Toyota's have "DRL OFF" on the light switch. If you want to drive with lights on during the daytime, you can, if you don't want to, you can turn them off. Makes everyone happy. These are true, Daytime Running Lights. What Honda has, and some others have, is actually called, Forced Lighting. With Forced Lighting, the driver has NO control, and is at the total mercy of the programmers in Japan / Detroit.

General Motors has petitioned the government on two separate occasions to mandate Forced Lighting (aka DRLs) in the US. In both instances, the U.S. government turned General Motors down citing NO safety evidence. Moreover, notice that most law enforcement vehicles have their Daytime Running Lights disconnected.

Far from being considered primarily as a 'safety feature', manufacturers and the motoring press are treating DRLs as a 'stylish addition' to a car, concentrating on the look of DRLs as adding character to a car rather than contributing to its safety.

A British study said that statistics about DRLs from eight European countries over a 15-year period show that road fatality rates dropped faster in NON-DRL countries such as Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands than fatalities in pro-DRL countries such as Finland, Norway and Sweden. Indeed, Austria has gone as far as to BAN Daytime Running Lights.

We needed to maneuver the car on several occasions. Moreover, it was quite cold outside and we occasionally turned on the car heater. This resulted in the headlights turning on. (General Motors normally uses the main headlights for their daytime running lights.)

You needed to maneuver the car several times at a drive in movie? Where even is there somewhere that still has drive in movies? And you were PHYSICALLY threatened by someone at a drive in movie because you couldnt turn off your daylight running lights? What in the hell... Did they threaten anyone else there? Or let me guess you were the only one present with a car equipped with daylight running lights.

Your reasons make absolutely no sense nor do I understand why you mention GM here, what does that have to do with anything?

I came here with a technical question seeking a technical answer. I really didn't want to debate the pros and cons of daytime running lights.

If you search the Internet for, "disable daytime running lights" you will find thousands of hits, from thousands of people trying to accomplish the same. YouTube as many videos showing how to disconnect / disable daytime running lights.

Many people want to do this, I am one of them. Other car companies have the ability to shut off daytime running lights, (but not Honda). For example, Toyota has, "DRL OFF" on the light switch, and they promote this feature on their website and in their brochure.

I do prefer Honda, but only if I can turn off the daytime running lights at my command.

I am still looking for a technical answer on how to accomplish this goal on a 2016 Accord.

Man, you gotta lighten up. This thread is no different from someone trying to delete power steering, or install a new stereo.

It absolutely is. Deleting power steering will give you better feel of the road and make for a more connecting between driver, machine, and road. Stereo will make for a more enjoyable ride if you listen to music. Killing the daytime running lights does absolutely nothing to benefit the driver in any way. Well I guess it does avoid getting beat up at the drive in movie, if you can find one. Lol

A 2016 Accord is similar to the 2013, 2014, and 2015 Accords.

If the under-hood Fuse A8 (7.5A) was pulled, the DRL relay doesn't get power.

Thanks, I ended up buying a Toyota because they have, "DRL OFF" on the light switch.

I'll be in the market for another car a few months, I'll check back with Honda to see if they have fixed this for the 2017 model year. I appreciate all of those who tried to help.

You can make a drl switch yourself, if the fuse is inside the car it would be too easy. Sounds like your worried about a CEL coming on from a drl though so Idk if this kind of stuff is for you.

Okay here is my my true legit reason. Let me start off by saying UNFORTUNETLY i live in Tijuana Mexico and cross the border everyday day to go to work in San Diego, i might miss 3 days out of the month. Sometimes twice a day.

My reason ....daily average of 1 hour and 10 minutes of waiting in line to cross at the San Ysidro Border in the car. Wake up at 330. Drive to the line and WAIT. DRL lights are on. I turn the headlights off. Would like the drls off too so that they are not burning out. Bought the car in April replaced at the dealer the driverside headlight because the drl stopped working the outter half. I dont start till 730 but the longer you wait for instance wake up at 430 amd you likely wont cross until 630 or later.

So like i said i usually get to work between 5 and 545 in the morn drive to the back parking lot. Sometimes its just cold as **** and cant fall asleep. So i turn on the car and heater and drls are on. Lighting up the whole backside of the condominuims where i work. Trying to fall asleep till 725 before i punch in. Is so hard when is cold.

So if anyone figured out how to turn them off. I aprricaite it.

turn the vehicle off, press the emergency break. Then turn on the vehicle. Lights should be off.
