ballast/ ignitor question
ok, so when i turn on my lights, they both turn on, but then the driver side starts to flicker then turns off, it is not the bulb, because i switched the driver side to the passenger side and it works, so is this because of my ballast or my ignitor?
i have hella gen 3 ballasts.
thx!

Well it doesn't really matter which one it is because the igniter and ballast are integrated into a single unit with the gen 3 ballasts.
Just wondering, tho, how long have you had them? My Philips LVQ-212's (same as Hella gen 3's) have been on my car for over 5 years now and still work great.

Re: ballast/ ignitor question (retrospek)
disconnect one ballast at a time to test each one...unplug power to either left or right and power only one ballast and repeat....
the ballasts do go bad...so i would not be surprised to see one of them bad

But he already knows that the one on the driver side is causing a flicker, so how would disconnecting each ballast one at a time determine anything?

without a relay he's powering both ballasts from stock wires....i know hella gen 3 ballasts do not draw more current compared to hid kits but still stock wires may not handle both ballasts....
he only swapped bulbs if I am reading it correctly...and they both turn on and later it dies....

But he said the driver side has the problem, and the passenger side works fine.
Stock wiring doesn't really have anything to do with it. There are still separate left and right headlight circuits (separate fuses) regardless of whether any relays are present or not.
I ran my Philips ballasts on stock wiring with 20A fuses in place of the original 10A fuses for almost 1 1/2 years before making my own harness with relays when I did my projector retrofit. I never had a single problem. The only reason I made harnesses was just for my peace of mind, because when I studied the factory wiring diagrams and saw that the full load of current to the headlights all goes through the switch inside the car (and I've burned out a few switches in my time), I figured it would be much safer to run the current from the battery through relays and have only a small amount of current running through the factory switch to trigger the relays.
To the OP: I think the answer is clear - you need a new driver side ballast.
However if it were me, I would be inclined to replace both ballasts with brand new ones, so that both would have the same amount of use on them, and ensure that the light from both bulbs look the same. I don't really know if one old ballast and one new ballast would affect how the light from the bulbs look, but I would do it just to be safe.

this is so gay! haha, i've waited a year to finish my retro fit, now i have to wait again.
i guess im going to rewire my stock h4 bulbs so i have something to light up at night.
i'll roam around hidplanet for some different ballasts, but i'd get a new one if i have to, but funds are low, time to save up!
i was sooo waiting to light up the streets with my tfx retro!
thanks guys!
