Default Knock sensor placement LS/VTEC

Ok. I have read many articles on where to put the knock sensor on an LS/VTEC. I have come to the conclusion that I will be tapping it into the alternator bracket.

Unless someone can think of an easier setup. (besides wraping it up and letting it hang)

Any help would be appreciated.

Alternator bracket???
I dont think thats a good idea.
Knock sensor should be as close as possible to the cylinder walls, therefore it should be in the engine block(or at the side). Just like a microphone, you point it where you want it to pick up sound.

I thought of that also. so I also read that you can cut mounting bracket for the alternator. ( the right of the 2 mounting holes) and just mount the knock sensor directly into the block. This location is only a few inches from the stock location.

Also, question about mounting it into the alternator bracket. it the sensor is mounted into bracket and the bracket is mounted into the block, how much of a variance would there actually be???? Just a question, not doubting your response.

I dont think anyone can really tell how much variance there would be in relocating a knock sensor. (or even how sensitive a knock sensor is). We do not even know if knock sensors operate at same frequency ranges. Maybe a knock sensor from a mitsubishi is more sensitive for a certain frequency range than a Honda because if different locations.
All the knock sensors I've seen are either on the side of the block sandwitched between 2 cyclinders or at the cylinder head pointed towards the combustion chamber. This might mean that a knock sensor is not that sensitive and requires to be really close to the cyls to detect it.

My opinion is all this potential work and finding out things is not worth the trouble.
Just start tuning your ignition timing from TDC and work yourself up. Back it off when the engine starts to knock.

I cut the alternator bracket and drilled and tapped the bracket hole for the knock sensor. It should work just fine; I know of a lot of people doing this successfully, including myself. You'll need a 12mmx1.25mm tap, and I believe the accompanying drill bit for that is 13/27. You'll have to double check on that though. Just don't drill too deep. You should have plenty of room, but I wouldn't drill much deeper than the depth of the sensor's threads. Hope this helps....
