Just got California BAR CERTIFIED with JDM B18C in EG!
Just got back from the State Ref Center. I passed and am now BAR Certified in the State of California with a 1997 JDM B18C.
It failed on my first try because a missing EVAP Purge valve, which isn't on the JDM engines, but is on the USDM ones and it also failed the Sniffer test too. Anyway here's the details for the first failing run:
1997 JDM B18C (probably about 100K miles on it and I told them it was a 1995 engine for OBDI)
USDM P72 OBDI ECU
Stock DX Cat (has 180,000 miles on it)
RS*R ExMag Catback
AEM Cold Air Intake for GSR (generic filter)
Ignition measured at 16 BTDC
Ran G2P fuel treatment 2 tanks before the test
Brand new Spark Plugs (Bosch +2 Platinum)
Tech said that the car was running slightly rich
Results:
MAX value | Measured Value
15mph (test done in 2nd gear)
engine RPM = 2018
CO2 = 14.3%
O2 = 0.3%
HC = 89 | 155 (Failed)
CO = .53 | .55 (Failed, barely)
NO = 708 | 1686 (Failed, miserably)
25mph (test done in 3rd gear)
engine RPM = 2307
CO2 = 14.7%
O2 = 0.0%
HC = 54 | 43(Passed)
CO = .51 | .12 (Passed)
NO = 746 | 198 (Passed, easily)
What didn't make sense to me was the NOx value dropped considerably from 15mph to 25mph and its only 300rpm difference ???
I don't understand why only 300 rpm made such a huge difference in values. .
Fast forward to Oct. 25, 2004
Just got back from the State Ref Center. I passed and am now BAR Certified in the State of California with a JDM B18C. Since the first time I failed, I brought it to a Smog Center they ran all the tests and determined that all I needed was a new CAT. The guy said that it was hollow, which doesn't explain why I pass at 25mph. Anyway, got a new 2.25" Carsound CAT installed and they adjusted the timing to 13 BTDC, Pre-tested and it passed. The Smog Center also determined that my car doesn't even need the EVAP Purge Valve, which they installed and then took back off! The called the Referee and he OK'ed it.
So I drove it 1,000 miles out to Arizona and back to visit the GF. While I was there, picked up another bottle of G2P fuel treatment. Ran it through a tank and dropped in the usual 91 Octane gas and went to the Referee Center. Only thing they noticed was I was 1 quart low on Oil.
Anyway here are the results for reference:
1997 JDM B18C (told the Referee it was a 1995 for OBDI)
USDM P72 OBDI ECU
New Carsound 2.25" Cat
RS*R ExMag Catback
AEM Cold Air Intake for GSR (generic filter)
Ignition changed to 13 BTDC
Ran G2P fuel treatment 1 tanks before the test
Same Spark Plugs as before (Bosch +2 Platinum)
MAX value | Measured Value (last time) | Measured Value (w/ New CAT and 13 DBTDC)
15mph (test done in 2nd gear)
engine RPM = 2018 | 1933
CO2 = 14.3% | 14.8%
O2 = 0.3% | 0.0%
HC = 89 | 155 | 72
CO = .53 | .55 | .14
NO = 708 | 1686 | 420
25mph (test done in 3rd gear)
engine RPM = 2307 | 2240
CO2 = 14.7% | 14.8%
O2 = 0.0% | 0.0%
HC = 54 | 43 | 36
CO = .51 | .12 | .06
NO = 746 | 198 | 151

If your swap is 100% correct and it passes smog you drive out with a BAR sticker on your car certifying the swap.

1st off, congrats on the BAR sticker, I myself have one for my H22 hatch.
Anyway, to clarify your questions. 25mph is the easiest to pass. That is because the cat is warm and when warm will catch all the hydrocarbon and the NOX is low.
15mph the cat doesn't have time to get warm so it doesn't catch as much Hydrocarbon. NOX will be higher
A thing to remember, run the car hard before you go test it and keep it running while you are filling out the paperwork and have them smog the car and not turn it off, that will keep the cat warm and will help on the 15mph test!

Re: Just got California BAR CERTIFIED with JDM B18C in EG! (Hapa88)
why do you restarted timing while running rich ? for smogging? and why changing new spark plugs to burn fuel more efficien
my smog requirement is coming up...
My mods: for hybrid gsr97 in civic 95ex coupe
1. AEM CAI (i have stock air box, so this will help)
2. Blox IM (still have stock GSR)
3. Type R header (still have stock header)
4. Car sound 2.5" 16"long ( will this contributes to passing smog?)
5. Greddy Muffler + 2.5 piping
6. plugs wires (i odnt have stock wires)
7. no EVAP Purge valve
im not sure about OBD1 or OBD2...i think im running OBD2
based on my experience my car is running rich...how rich i dont know (can adjusting timing to retarded help?)
