Buying Civic EG6 with JDM B18C type R engine : How to BAR/Smog/Register ?
Hi,
This question might be related to Californian members, but if anybody can help, this would be great !
As explained in my introduction post, I would like to buy a civic EG6 from 93, with an engine/transmission/ECU + other swapped for a JDM B18C type R '98 spec.
The car was registered/smog before the swap, and before buying it, I would like to know how I can smog it / BARd it / register it properly in California.
Does anybody already BARd/smog/register properly this swap ?
My aim is to get this car for track purpose but still street legal to be able to drive it to the track and not towing it.
thanks for your help
Leo.

If it's a real EG6 RHD Japanese import, no you can't register it.
As far as the emissions end of it goes. The status of JDM engine swaps seems to vary weekly in CA and even then seems to depend on just what part of the state you are in and who the ref is etc. The last I heard JDM engine replacements were legal, but not swaps. IE a JDM B18C is a legal replacement for a USDM GS-R, but it's not legal as a swap into a civic. If you BARd a civic with a USDM B18C1/B18C5 and then replaced the engine with a JDM swap that may also be legal.

Thanks a lot !
I asked the seller and the car was not equipped with USDM Type R before the JDM B18C has been put in, so basicaly this car will never be street legal
That's really unlucky for me, it was a prefect car with a very clean swap-in, not a junk car like the hundreds you can find on craigslist

Contact your local ref and see what the current status is would be my best advice. It seems like this stuff varies a lot by county, even then it seems to change a lot in a short time. Some refs are supposed to be more lenient than others. Some may let it pass as long as all the correct emissions equipment is there and working. But this really is something you'll have to check closely on your own.
