Default 4th Gen Civic ZC D16 Swap questions

Hi all, first post

I have a std 90 civic hatch with the 70hp mustang eater My car has a 4spd, no ac, no power steering, but it does have the multiport injection.

My std is a sohc, and the d16 is a dohc, so I should get more power. I just purchased a 89 integra ls with the d16 zc clone motor with 5 spd. Even if it's only 40 or 50 hp it's better than nothing. I plan to re build the motor anyway, so I'll probaly throw some perf parts in anyway. To me it's just a toy, I drive it to and from work like I'm in the daytona 500, and every month or so go to the track and run it. That's it! I'm a husband and father and right now it's just a hobby. Maybe one day when it really catches my attention, I'll drop a b18 in and go nuts. I'd really like to drive scca.

Anyway, I've been doing some reading on the web and I found a site that clearly stated that the 89 teg motor won't fit in my civic because the mounts are different. Is this true? I hope it's not! I thought the zc and the D16 are the same motors mostly.

If it is, how difficult is it to custom make some motor mounts? I've looked at some ones for the b16 on ebay (http://www.streetimports.com/mounts/mounts2.jpg), and they look easy enough to make provided you had a solid place to mount them to. Anyone ever done this, or know of any web sites? Can stock mounts from another car be used and bolted and welded in place?

Does anyone know where I could buy the circular pieces in the pics with the polyurethane in them? I thought maybe I could get them at a suspension place or something. Anyone have any ideas?

Does anyone have any advice, ideas, insight on these questions? I really appreciate it!

-John

The 86-89 D16A1 Integra motors will bolt into the 3G 84-87 Civic/CRX. It will not bolt into the 4G chassis due to the mounting system. It's honestly not worth the work it would take to make that motor fit. Yes, it's true that it shares parts with the DOHC ZC, but externally the mounts are what sets them apart.

Thanks for the info, would you mind elaborating on anything like the differences in mounts and the zc vs d16 internally.

Wouldn't 50 hp gain give me aliitle more speed to and from work.

Thanks for the info!

Also, there is a 86 crx with a zc in it for sale near me, and was wondering if that would fit my 90 civic? That would have to have diff mounts to then right?

the DOHC ZC and D16A1 share a lot of internal parts like valvetrain, rods, etc. - externally they are completely different - different block, different head, different intake manifold, different exhaust manifold, different mounts, use a different model transmission, different timing gears, different valve cover - in other words they aren't even close - DOHC ZC is about 130hp - D16A1 is 112-118hp

no that wont fit, and its probably a brown top which uses vacume advanced distributor...

if you want some power and nothing to expensive...look into getting a D16A6 engine/tranny/ecu and the knuckle/hub assembly from a crx or civic Si 88-91...you would also need the axles and you need to do the MPFI swap, im pretty sure you car would stil be DPFI...

Actually you don't need the larger DX/Si hubs if you are staying D series. The 4spd axles will fit the 5spd DX and Si tranny's because the length and inner CV joint on the 4spd axles are the same as the 5spd ones. You only need to switch to the larger hubs when doing a B series swap since you have to use the B series axles.

oh ok, thanks...i thought you had to swap out the 4 speed axles/hubs when you were doing any other swap...

id still do it anyway considering they are pretty cheap...

I did as well until I swapped a 90 CRX Si tranny into my friend's 88 Civic STD. The 4spd axles will work as long as you stay with the D series. Since then I've done 2 other similar swaps both using the 4spd axles.
