Honda Accord: Spark Plug Reviews

Spark plugs play an important role in your car's performance and fuel economy. But which ones are the best for your particular needs? Here is a run down of the most popular Honda Accord spark plug brands.

This article applies to the Honda Accord (1990-2002).

Spark plugs might just be the most important component for the engine's performance that many people tend to overlook. They provide the spark that ignites the fuel/air mixture inside the combustion chamber, and forces the pistons down, creating power and speed. Spark plugs also serve to dissipate heat by transferring it to the car's cooling system. Just like anything else, there are several kinds of spark plugs. Some are made of exotic materials, and some even contain precious metals. But which ones serve your performance preference and budget? Here is a rundown of the most popular brands for the Honda Accord.

NGK Laser Platinum

Price – $14

Material – Copper/Iridium/Platinum

Performance – Improved throttle response over stock

Lifespan – Excellent

Warranty – 60 day, manufacturer defects

The NGK plug is known for its performance and capability to last. The use of platinum only extends the life of these plugs, reducing their wear rate and increasing durability. The laser welded technology NGK uses results in a more precise weld, which leads to less debris and lowers the voltage required to bridge the spark gap. All NGK plugs receive universally high praise among the Honda-Tech community, and are a highly preferred replacement for stock plugs. Recommended for its high-quality build, long lifespan, and durability.

NGK Iridium IX

Price – $12

Material – Copper/Iridium

Performance – Increased throttle response over stock

Lifespan – Good

Warranty – 60 days, manufacturer defects

The Iridium IX may not last as long as the Platinum NGK models, but they are still a solid buy at a cheaper price. You would still get an increased throttle response and anti-fouling, courtesy of the laser-welded iridium tip, which has a very high melting point. The IX also features trivalent metal plating that possesses superior anti-corrosion and anti-seizing performance. If you want a great, long lasting spark plug, but don't necessarily want to pay extra for the platinum, then IX is a great choice. Recommended for its high-quality features, and ability to withstand performance demands.

Denso Iridium

Price – $7

Material – Copper, Iridium

Performance – Improved acceleration over stock

Lifespan – Good

Warranty – 1 year parts

The Denso Iridium spark plug isn't as widely heralded as the NGK Laser Platinum or NGK Iridium IX plugs, but this is an excellent choice for the price. Denso plugs offer similar improvements in performance and fuel economy, as well as a longer lifespan than the stock plugs. The strength and hardness of iridium means little to no electrode wear over time, even with performance applications. Some have reported getting around 100,000 miles of life out of these plugs along with a 1 to 5 percent increase in fuel economy. Recommended for its lowe price, and capacity to enhance fuel economy.
