Default *Another S2000 engine powered ae86 corolla thread*

I got a few requests to post this up. this is my D1/Formula D car. What makes this a little unique is that the Formula D rulebook doesnt allow any cutting of the firewall or transmission tunnel. All of the f20/f22 corollas ive seen have had the firewall and tranny tunnel cut wide open.

the motor is an 06' f22. For start, the basic setup will be pretty simple. basic BDL stuff including throttle body, fuel rail and regulator, Im gonna make a header for it. Im working on an getting an excedy twinplate for it. Of course a custom alluminum driveshaft. well, you guys get the idea, all this stuff is just copied from another forum so dont mind the weird rambling and answering of questions. this is where it stands right now, im hoping to have it running before the end of the month. if you guys have any questions or comments feel free.

picked up a new motor yesterday, this thread will be my install plus the rest of the stuff to get ready for d1 in march

a few warm up pics:

the car now

so what does it take to make a corolla faster......without spending j-money or having big sponsorships?.....

2.2l of honda madness lol

well you guys get the idea, im pulling the 4ag tomorrow night and im thinking the motor should be fully mounted by the end of the weekend, we will see.

did some work:

ok, heres the issues:

i had to lower the crossmember to drop the motor in and to clear the tranny tunnel

currently the crank pully is sitting on the tension rod support i made

the shifter sits about 4 inches further back and will be about 7 inches back after i find a way to move the motor back

which brings me to: the motor sits too far forward without subframe modification

well....back to work....

the tranny isnt the problem when moving the motor back, its the subframe. there is plenty of space for the tranny to move around. also another thing to note are the tight clearance for the steering column. im finishing up the crossmember right now. just eating some sweet jack in the box tacos...then ill get back on it.

thats kind of what i did but i didnt want to get so drastic. the factory crossmember is triple thick in some areas and cross braced inside as well so i didnt want to compromise that. the one in that picture looks very weak in my opinion. my solution was to cut what i needed from the crossmember then modify the oil pan for the rest of the clearance. heres a few more pics of todays progress. this is most likely where the motor will be.
yes i know my mig welding sucks, lol. but i make up for it with my tig. tig is basically all i do, but i decided to mig the crossmember because the metal was so shitty and i got lazy, lol

good night, hopefully i can work on this some more this week, if not then next weekend for sure

ae86 looks great.

why the f22c though? why not a f20 that revs to 9k?

are you planning to build the motor up n/a?

the f22 can rev to 9000 without any problems too. im working on getting a toda head package together and im thinking the motor should be safe to about 9500 without any shortblock modifications. the biggest advantage going with the 2.2 for me is the added torque. The old 4ag probably made about 105 ftlb tq and it made it so i constantly had to clutch kick to keep the revs up. this really takes a tole on the final drive and axles. im trying to get away from this so i dont have to replace the 500 dollar 4.9 final drive set every few months, lol. oh yeah, i forgot to mention the car has a 4.9. does anyone have any experience with a 4.9 in an s2000?

4.9 + F22 @ 9k = torque.

Way to get creative with the crossmember.

Is there no room to slide the engine back a couple more inches?

the problem with moving it further back is the clearence between the crossmember and oil pan. if i cut any more of the crossmember it would be making it alot weaker. im getting around the drive by wire by using a sustom tb from bdl they are making for me. The guys from BDL ( which are really cool guys ) are helping me with the fuel system and throttle body. i recieved the fuel rail, regualtor, fuel filter and tb today. i found out the 06 tb has a different mounting setup than the older ones so im sending it back and there are going to make a tb for the 06'. i also just test fir the fuel rail and its different to, so that will go back also. im sure the guys at BDL will have no problems producing the new ones to worrk with the 06' model. more pics:

oh also the car is sponsored by haltech, it currently runs an E8, this will also run the f22.

Are you sure about that? How do you know the F22C won't encounter problems when joined with a 4.9 FD? You might not experience any problems redlining this engine periodically but under constant redlining it may not last very long. With a 4.9 FD it won't have problems getting to to 9k rpm fairly quickly.

i'm pretty sure the hondata reflash for 06 S2Ks raises the redline to 9K, and i trust hondata pretty well. if not, he even said he's working on a toda head kit, which would include valve springs and valve retainers

awesome project with some unique conditions

I have a side question. . .do you have any photos of the seat mounting? If so, I'd love to see them.

Good luck! Are you one of the guys who built the white fit for sema?

Good luck~
