So I've been looking for a Ruckus, but I want to put a GY6 in it. So I've been looking for a frame, bad engine, work out motor, etc. Something that I can work with without feeling like I'm wasting a perfectly good scooter. And I found just that, a frame with wheels and a harness for a couple hundred bucks.

I just want to see what the forum's opinion is on this. I want to extend it a little bit, something I am sure I can fabricate no problem. Swap in the GY6 motor and trans (CVT). And proceed to use it as a spare daily ride when the sun is shining.

As far as experience, I have done a few motor swaps. I've actually done a motor swap and a big bore kit install on a scooter before. I've heard scooters are pretty easy to get into if you have car experience. Is this true?

Aside from TotalRuckus and This site, any good places to read? I don't see a lot of information (compared to Honda swaps) out there. I'm trying to figure it all out before I jump into something. But I would definitely like a smaller project to work on and I loved my last scooter (aside from that pesky 35 mph top speed).

Does the frame still have the tag on it? That's the only thing I would be concerned about, but other than that, that's an awesome find. If you have the time and the funds then this would be an excellent project. Just realize it's far more expensive to build a Ruckus up from scratch. I came from tooling around on my car too, and working on the Ruckus is a breeze.

If you have done a swap before, then this should be no problem. There's plenty of sites that sell pretty much everything you need top to bottom. I wouldn't be concerned about "ruining" a complete Ruckus though, many people even buy brand new ones only to strip them all the way down. The reason being is that a complete scoot includes all the little bolts, washers, etc. that can be a pain in the *** to track down.

I'm still on the stock GET, but from what I've read and seen, the GY6 is the most common swap. TotalRuckus is probably the best resource out there, and there's a ton of links to guides. They even have the service manual on there incase you get stuck. Also the Ruckus community kicks ***, and one of the reasons I've enjoyed mine so much. I'd visit some of the shops and meet with the builders too, they are really good about answering questions regarding their builds.

I'm actually contemplating buying a 2014 Ruck that has been modded already. The price is probably very close to what I'd spend by the time I finished and it is no headache.

Bought not built anyone? Haha. Going to test ride it this weekend.

I've been all over TotalRuckus lately. The site is pretty good but the community is a lot like HondaTech. The built not bought, individualistic, young, crowd.

What was modded on the Ruck? It sounds like you are pretty mechanically inclined, so give the scoot a complete look over. You don't want to be buying someone else mess. I was in the same boat as you and checked out a seemingly "nice" GY6" on Craigslist. That thing was a ghetto-rigged pile.

I am going to give the wiring a very close look over. The general cleanliness and definitely see how the tune is holding up. The scooter looks good from what I can see. But I will ask questions when I get there.




There is a picture of the ruckus. It is pretty much everything I had planned. Wide rear tire, stretch, lower, LED lights, GY6 swap, etc. The exhaust looks pretty lame to me, nothing I can't weld up though. And the intake looks a little sloppy. Not sure what filter he is using on the carb. But those are all things I will look at for sure. What is a good 'quiet' exhaust for these scooters? I can weld, so I basically just need the muffler section. The scooter has a header from what I can see.

I'm definitely interested in what mount he used. Don't want to die.
