i know they both have the same purpose but high flow cats are pretty expensive. im asking if there is a noticeable benefit from a cat as to just welding your own pipe for a lot cheaper. my only concern would be the o2 sensor.

A noticable difference? Of course! Lets see...you will be polluting the environment even worse, you won't pass inpection, you will have to fool your ECU into thinking you have a real cat (or have a CEL on all the time ), and your car will sound crappy.

If it's too expensive for you to get a high flow cat, then just don't get anything.

I've used a resonated and straight test pipe and finally decided to go with a high flow cat. Tests prove that on a NA car that the HP differences are minimal... IMO the smell and raspy sound aren't worth the maybe 1 HP difference.

Yeah High flow def. I got me a resonated test pipe right now(its illegal) someone is selling me a high flow in a week. The car smells like bad exhaust right now.

Get a high flow cat or just leave current setup until you can afford one.

Here is a comparison between a 200 cell cat and a test pipe, both in 2.25" dia. The dyno is from a K24, but you get the idea there's not much of difference in gain for NA application. The blue is the test pipe.

race car = open header (no test pipe, no exhaust)

stop polluting the air in your STOCK motor.

good post. The test pipe would gain a little more power if the mixture was richened up a little bit. Nevertheless, good post.

As I can see you are the bumper of old threads here. To awnser your question, my test pipe does have a spot for an 02 sensor.

IDK why your CEL light comes on, you are going to have to be more specfic as to what code you are throwing.

The above are some smaller Carsound cats with 400 cell ceramic substrates. They flow more than stock mainly because they have larger outlets than stock. But a 300 or 200 cell cat will flow even more. My 2-1/2" 300 cell metal substrate cats flow around 365 cfm @ 28 inches where my 200 cell metal substrate cats flow around 440 cfm.

95green: was ur TP resonated? if not, that could be why it sounded so bad. i just went from unresonated tp to resonated by megan and it sounds a lot better than before.
