Sorry for the noob question but I know I'm not supposed to just change from regular oil to synthetic oil, but what about synthetic blend? I'm using regular Valvoline 10w30 on my H22a at the moment, any suggestions?

I use 5w30 full synthetic mobil 1 and a fram tough guard filter. once you go syntec many suggest not switching back. ps always use mobil its the shyt

I thought you couldn't use synthetic unless you got a fresh rebuild engine, not after miles and miles of driving, cuz then the seals will leak, that's what I read long ago, I'm not sure if it's true or not.

if you allready have leaky seals then yes it will leak more or because it being soo slippery itll get past old seals conventional oil couldnt. my engine has 66k and newly installed rear main seal

No leaky seals yet, what about synthetic blend? do you feel better like your engine performs better by using synthetic oil? I just don't like the idea of paying over $5 bucks a quart but if it's worth it then I'll do it.

my 01 dakota had a bad case of oil cooking in the head and causing severe sludge problem. switched to syntec and problem gone so it got me ever since. my buddy has the crappy 2.7 chrysler that barely last 100k but uses only syntec and has 215k now. only problem is you cant use syntec on brand new cars or engines because its delays the break-in process.

Go full synthetic, and thats a myth about needing it to be on a fresh engine.

I made the switch from conventional to full synthetic at 135K. I have 143K now and no leaks. I did replace the cam seal, VTEC solenoid gasket/screen, the distributor o-ring, and valve cover gasket first though (since these are the typical oil leak areas on an H22 beside the oil cooler o-ring).

I'm an oil expert...Amsoil is a far superior synthetic in so many ways. Hopefully your basing your opinion on hard evidence?

To the OP: Valvoline high mileage oil has very little synthetic oil in it. It has higher concentrations of detergents, sludge dispersants, and seal conditioning additives. Your car will probably not run much different performance-wise.

another thing to add here is FRAM oil filter is asking u for trouble oem honda oil filters only like 2 dollars more for something better might as well if your gong to use expensive oil

Free Synthetic Blend oil change?
I normally do all my own oil changes with fully synthetic PP and OEM filters. My local firestone just sent me a coupon for a free oil change but they wont use Full Synthetic, they will just use Synthetic Blend. They swore up and down it would not be bad for the car at all.

I REALLY need the oil change and was wondering if i should just go for it for FREE, or am i just being stupid by breaking with my routine?

I also want to add seafoam to the crankcase before the change too, but since im a bit over the scheduled maintenance i dunno if i should hold off until my next change so that i dont overload the already struggling filter. Any thoughts?

whats the big deal with FRAM oil filters? i have never seen something people hate on so much. everyone says they are "crap". what is your proof?

I work for Tires Plus (owned by Bridgestone/Firestone) and everything is the same here as at Firestone. We both use Kendall oil and offer the
good - Kendall synthetic blend
better - Kendall high mileage
best - Kendall full synthetic
your free coupon is for the 'good' service and running the blend is fine, and you do not need to worry about anything, but if you want for $20 more you can have them use the Kendall full synthetic. I would bring in a Honda OEM filter 15400-PLM-A02, (preferably an S2K one part# is 15400-PCX-004), or a K&N part# is HP1004, or a Mobil1 M104 instead of using the Firestone TF2808 filter which is included with the oil change. They will give you the Firestone TF2808 filter to keep (since it's included with the LOF) & you brought in your own filter. I would stay away from putting seafoam in your oil though. If you must use it then just introduce it through the brake booster vacuum line and pour some in the gas tank before going in for your free LOF.

looks like the only Fram he liked was the Japanese made XG3593A this post was last updated 8 years ago (2001) so the oil filters' quality MAY or MAY NOT have changed since then.

I've never had an issue and thats all I run. I've heard horror stories, but I can't back it up with experience.

that link about fram was some guy doing a test in his yard and even clearly admits the variable are not the same for proven results. frams are decent and I dont need hard-evidence to share my suggestion. its what I use and it was recommended by the honda dealer here in detroit so I just shared some info. I never had issues with it and neither has the millions of people people that buy it.

come on man, oil is oil for the most part. just buy some synthetic, i prefer castrol because it seems to take longer to break down as compared to mobil. but an FYI, last time i changed my oil i bought that new castrol edge synthetic and a mobil 1 filter, cost me $70 for an oil change. pretty rough.

I did my research about switching from conventional to fully synthetic won't hurt the engine at all. You can do so in a regular basis. I've switched back to conventional oil twice and now back to Mobile 1 fully synthetic oil.

I've been using the Fram Extra Guard oil filter and I've never had any problem with it whatsoever.

Did you buy it by the quart or somethin? I bought the new castrol edge in a 5 qt jug for $27 and use the same filter as nus_dogg and only came out a tad over $30. =/

yeah i got hosed. the local auto parts store doesn't carry the 5 quart jugs and i am no where near a walmart where i can get one, shitty

if you can afford it, i would go with something like: Joe Gibbs, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Eunos, Torco, even Redline. Mobil1 has taken out some important elements in their synthetic oil to be more EPA friendly. with the h22 rocker pad issue at hand i would definitley want something in my oil to help fight against any wear and tare.... gotta fight the friction
