Stock catalytic converter
Does anyone still have the original catalytic converter on there car? Did your car pass smog last time you had to smog it? How long do catalytic converters usually last?
Thanks

Ummm if its the stock cat why wouldn't one pass emission. Its not like Honda is going to sell cars that don't pass emission. Why don't you provide more info related to your specific question, cus I just answered your question.

Re: Stock catalytic converter (RAB)
Ok well I bought the car with a H22a swap with a test pipe in place of the catalytic converter. I need to register the car and need to pass emissions. The converter the guy had given me is the stock cat. I am wondering if it would have any issues in passing smog with the H22a swap and old catalytic converter? The converter seems to be on its last leg, but I wouldn't really know, it has alot of carbon build up around the flanges and inside up to the screen. Does any of that matter. Could I pass with the test pipe on? Can the old converter still do its job if it has been out of the car for sometime?
I hope that helps you, I don't really know how to word it.
Thanks
Mike

I believe as long as the stock cat isn't gutted or in any other way damaged you should be fine. I got my car (98) tested last year and had no problems. The only problem I've had with emissions has been O2 sensor based. Sometimes the O2 sensors go bad (especially if you put in an aftermarket header) Watch out for the O2 sensors.

Re: Stock catalytic converter (staticrex)
Uncle SAM says that they are supposed to last at least 5 years or 50,000 miles from the date of install on a new car. I've never had one fail even after 10 years and 100,000+ miles. You will kill it with certain gas tank products or leaded gas. Possible to do some damage using NOX, etc.
As to the sensors-the O2 sensor is a known issue with Honda. They do have a working life that is also supposed to be at least as long as a convertor's. This assumes you buy a genuine Honda one. Several aftermarket ones are known to fail (look at the price difference too).
I don't have enough experience with my CRX's header to say that the sensor is in any way affected by it versus the stock manifold. What I will say is that it is now way down on the pipe comapred to stock.

Re: Stock catalytic converter (AndyD)
Well, the car passed UT emissions easily with the stock cat. I dont know how stricked NV is but i dont think its as bad as UT.

i'm not positive on this but i believe that now when someone sells their car, THEY are liable if the car does not pass smog, so if your car doesnt pass, you can have the guy replace the cat or do whatever is needed to pass
