Default Speedo and Rev counter problems on a '93 Vtech

Hello,
Firstly, a large thank you to the members on this site who have contributed to the 4WS 'fix its'. I followed the soldering instructions to the letter, the light has stayed off and my pants are once again clean.
I'm hoping you can advise me on the issues I'm now experiencing with my '93 import Vtech prelude. In the last few weeks my speedo stops working mid journey. After a few miles of staying at zero, the 4WS light comes on and so does the check engine light. It doesn't do this everytime. About the same time that this started, the tickover developed a life of its own. Once the car has warmed up, instead of ticking over at ~1000, it fluctuates constantly between 1000 - 2,500. This is embarrassing at traffic lights. Do you think the two problems are linked? I've read a few things about speedos not working and heard that the speedo sensor is normally to blame but my speedo often works.
Any help would be great
Dave

This thread should give you some insight on the bouncing/surging idle problem. Quite common:

Thanks for the link mate. I started off with the simplest first - the radiator needed a litre of water! A quick drive showed no problems whatsoever. I'll take it out for a longer run tomorrow though. I don't have a clue about car electrics, do you think the speedo stopping working could be related to things overheating? Thanks again
