Easy to see the oil that WAS in there was run for way way wayyyyy too long. It looks like mud. I wouldn't trust that motor if it was me no matter how good they cleaned up the outside.

That oil really looks horrendous. You could probably clean all that up using something like AutoRx (http://auto-rx.com/pages/faqs.htm), oil forum guys at Bobistheoilguy swear by this stuff. It works very well.

Normally people perform routine maintenance like tbelt, water pump, etc, but in this case might not be a bad idea to change bearings as well.

If someone posts a picture of what it normally looks like under the valve cover you'd **** your pants.

is that the passanger side exhaust cam with the worn spot?
i damage my oil pan, conitinued to drive it, made some god awful noises and finally died (yea yea i was dumb lets leave it at that). when i pulled the vc off it looked worse than that. what i am trying to say is that lobe does not look good to me. i am not an engine expert, but...

as someone mentioned replacing the bearing maynot be a bad idea. might as well go ahead and get some performance cams.

best of luck.

Also you can send the oil off to have it analized, theres a service that does it, can't recall the name of the place. I'm sure there is enough left in the motor to have it looked over.

yeah the #4 Exh Vtec lobe looks a little worn but I would pick it up for that price if my intentions were to replace the cams like you said.

Yeah, I think it will be all right if I run some detergent oil stuff in it and baby it until I it cleans out some. I'm just debating on tearing the block down

I would run a compression test and go from there. Maybe pull the pan and make sure you don't find any other fun stuff before you start it up.

Minimal cost to repair that...especially if you get new cams. I think you still came out on top.
