Problems, problems, problems.... PAYPAL $20 to whoever finds out what the problem is!
This problem has been going on for some time now. I've researched and researched and could not find the exact problem. Its starting to get really annoying now and I can't enjoy my car like I used to. 1998 Honda Prelude, base.
Heres the problem:
-I'm at a stop sign, completely stopped.
-I accelerate, and the engine bogs down/hesitates and sounds like its backfiring. RPM's stay frozen around 2500.
-The engine bogging/hesitation, the sound of like its backfiring, and the frozen 2500 RPM's all happens only for about 3 seconds.
--But if I rev the motor to 4000 RPMS and then take off, the problem isn't there at all.
--Also, I do have the notorious 3000 RPM hesitation, which can also last 3 seconds.
--If the car is loaded up with people, the problem is noticeably a lot worse.
Recent work (within the last 2 months/2000 miles):
New parts include: spark plug wires, dist. cap & rotor, valve cover gasket kit, generic catalytic converter, oil changed.
Check engine light is on also:
Diagnostics came up with this:
P0133 O2 sensor circuit slow response Bank 1 Sensor 1
P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire detected
P0303 Cylinder 3 misfire detected
P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire detected
P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire detected
P0300 Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected
I will seriously PayPal $20 to whoever truly finds out what the problem is. It might take awhile since I have to actually do the work and fix whatever needs fixing, but if you were right and the problem is gone. $20 to your PayPal account.

bad crank angle sensor, or distributor. Worse case bad ecu, but I doubt it. if it's any of these things, you can keep your money

I'm alot more with trying to get rid of the bogging/hesitation first since I can live with a CEL on my dashboard. But yeah, I'd like to knock out both problems at the same time.

what spark plugs are you running? is the ECU stock for the car?

i had something like this on my accord, it was mostly the fuel filter. Most of the problem is gone now. but seems to remain a little bit. maybe the injectors now..egr checked fine, and every other tune up part has been replaced...

Given that you're throwing an o2 sensor code, I'd start there. Yours is 12 years old, so it's probably due. Change it out then clear the ECU and see what happens. Misfires across all four cylinders could also be a fuel delivery problem; check the pressure at the rail.

i agree it can be crank angle sensor, ecu, dist,or injectors and fuel filter

Ok cool. Thanks for the PM^
This problem was not apparent at all until we started messing with the spark plugs. So I'm guess it probably needs new spark plugs.
With barely any knowledge with cars, I would also think that it could be the fuel filter also. Since if fuel really goes through the filter, maybe when I accelerate, the filter is glogged up and not much fuel is going through, making it hesitate and not accelerate correctly. And this only happens in first gear, not in any of the other gears.

Since you're misfiring on all four cylinders and i read that you recently replaced the valve cover gasket, check the spark plugs b/c they might be fouled up or coated in oil. I had a 98 civic that had codes for all 4 cylinders and it turned out to be all four spark plugs were just fouled up. OBDII cars are sensitive like that haha

20 bucks.
Fix 1 thing at a time.
egr sounds clogged, bad ground could cause all those issues.
ill take 20 bucks just for the hell of it. thnks

well i just resolved this same issue. it was intermittant at first but then car died and wouldnt start. turns out the coil went bad, it would test just fine until i took the coil out turned it on its side tested again and no continuity. put a new one and works now. seems like a good place to look with all 4 cylinders miss firing.

what is the exact spark plug part number that you have? Is it a resistor plug? If not you need to get a resistor plug in there. Non resistor plugs cause electrical noise that backfeeds into the ecu via the grounds.

This might sound stupid but worth checking... you said you got new plug wires. Did you make sure you connected them properly? As in correct firing order from the dist. to the individual cylinders?
Because if the problem really started when dealing with your spark plugs and youre all of a sudden now misfiring on all cylinders, it might be worth double checking.

I have the same issue with H22A swap. The term that I told is that my Distributor is "down on power". Very common with the JDM Dist. You will have to replace your JDM distributor. I am currently sending mine back at the moment.

I agree, make sure your wires that are connected to the distributor is connected correctly!

Today I was almost empty on my way to the gas station and it was doing the hesitation/bogging noticeably worse than usual. Fuel filter?

buy a new honda fuel filter and go from there. also ur throwing an o2sensor cel so that should be the first thing replaced that would cause these symtoms with the o2 sensor not reading correctly.
