Problem with EL gauge installation
Hey, bare with me this is going to be a long post!
I bought me an EL gauge cluster from a junk yard, along with its inverter box and dimmer module. I also took some of the wire loom/plugs so I can figure out which wire goes where. I have looked at a number of installation guides on the net from many different forums but I couldn’t find a solution. I have a Jdm h22a prelude (1992, 4ws, no abs or srs) and the cluster is out of a Jdm auto non vtec (has 4ws but I could see the srs indicator).
I’m having trouble getting the EL cluster to work due to the large number of wires. There seems to be a fair few wires that correspond with each other (color wise), which makes it hard to install correctly. I have attached images of some of the plugs and the location of the color wires. I need to match up the corresponding wires so I can get the gauges going. So if anyone has experience with the EL install you may be able to make sense of the differences between the wire looms between the two cars. Most of the wires have been matched up (like some of the auto related wires etc) but there are still a few that I can’t figure out. Any help will be great, hard to drive without the speedo/rev cluster!
Below (see image 3) is a wire schematic that I generated in an attempt to find the relationships between the wire colors and the various wire plugs. There are a couple of numbering mistakes (for the 16 pin plugs (referred to as 16P)) I missed slot 10 but I have corrected for it in the table below. On the left of the image is the 16P plugs, on the right/center are the other smaller plugs. The top half of the image has stock non EL and bottom half of the image is EL plugs.
OK so below (image 4) is a table that I was able to create after many hours looking at the relationship between the plugs. On the left there is the Plugs that are in my factory wire loom (Non EL) and on the right is the EL loom’s plugs. The table has the left stock non EL wire plugs aligned with the corresponding EL plug/slot that matches it color wise. Note that each plug on the EL side of the table (right) has been labeled according to their location. So the 16 pin plug is 16P, the 10 pin plug is 10P, the 6 pin plug is 6P and the 6 pin dimmer plug is 6DP.
There are some wires that remain unmatched, and a few wires that are too common to derive a match for color wise. If anyone who has installed the EL gauges has any idea as to what the extra wires are, or know which one aren’t needed etc etc, please give me some feedback. Thanks

Re: Problem with EL gauge installation
1 thing that's gonna make it difficult is that it's the JDM cluster, with the curve of the dash it isn't going to fit. You might wanna consider just trying to get rid of that cluster and get the actual USDM one with the FULL harness, it'll be a lot easier.

Guess I should add that I have a JDM Prelude and I got a JDM EL cluster, so its a JDM Non-EL swap to a JDM EL swap with both clusters being automatic and both having the 4WS indicator.

Re: Problem with EL gauge installation
Hi there,
I never did figure out why the gear selection lights did not work... The wiring appeared to be correct for the most part.
If you check this diagram (bottom right) you will see that there are quite a few wires for which I could not find an actual purpose in any car manual... One of these will likely be the power wire for the gear selection lights.
The only way to get it to work would be to try putting 12volts- just temporary- into each of the unknown wires with the EL harness and checking to see when the gear selection light actually lights up or flickers (so with the ignition switch on). Then you will be able to get them to work. Good luck!!! My EL cluster is still working- minus the gear selection lights, sports light and the blue high beam indicator light haha.

I would go back to the junkyard and get the entire dash harness so its plug n play.
Preludepower used to have diagrams before everyone figured out the easy way
