oil leak leading to baaad sound out of motor
long post, gotta give all the details...
so im driving along on the highway, 75 in the fast lane. heater on, and a little bit of smoke starts coming out of my vents, not a lot. then, oil light blinks for a split second. its blinked before, when i was low on oil and took a turn rather quickly. im sure some of you know what i mean.
anyway, i turn heat off. smoke still coming out, but very little. slight burning oil smell. had my window cracked open to vent some smoke, and a faint noise started coming from motor. kind of a click clack, that within ten seconds, got really loud. oil light came on, solid. kept car on about 4 seconds longer, just enough to get out of fast lane, out of the way of the semis, and over to shoulder. 4 seconds.
car shuts off on me during the 4 second lane change. get to shoulder, get out, check oil level. it was bone dry. added oil, i had two gallons. added it, and as soon as i turn on car, smoke came out, heavy. that loud noise, not so loud anymore. until ten seconds pass. noise comes back, oil light back on. obviously drooling oil somewhere. put more oil in, turn on and jump under car, and i can see it pouring out from oil filter area.
after checking, i found that the gasket between the oil cooler and block was broken. replaced it. filled it up. ZERO oil leak. oil leak fixed. but, the car was making a damn knocking noise. rod knock, because it happened to me before. really low, but still there. so i drove like a grandma, hoping to get it to the next day (friday), so i could open it up and take a look.
on my way to work, the car got really rough on me, idle was getting super low, knocking noise super loud. i was doin maybe 30, foot off accel. all of a sudden, for a split second, it was like i hit a wall. kind of like my wheels seized, then released immediately. after that, it sounded like something was flying around inside a cylinder.
any ideas? did that extra 4 seconds with no oil and car running destroy it?

When you say 2 gallons I hope to god you meant 2 quarts?!
Sounds like you may have siezed a cylinder and snapped the connecting rod the way you say it feels like you hit a wall and then it went one with a back clunking?

your bearings/crank are done and you probably threw a rod. did you at least save some money on your car insurance by switching to geico??

Re: oil leak leading to baaad sound out of motor (Missing Gears)
ive had geico since the cavemen :D
i meant two gallons, i had two gallons in the car just in case. but, being that it was empty, i dumped about 3 qts in it. not two GALLONS
i can start the car, but it turns off in about 3 seconds. doesnt feel like a rod is broken, YET. i know the feel of a cylinder being gone. its not rough, its just making a stupid loud noise and turning off. im sure a rod is going to break though, if not already.
stupid thing. $2.39 freakin gasket blowing, and this is the result

Re: (blackline)
sounds like you threw a rod, and the noise you were hearing is most likely a sprung bearing. I am having the same problem, except my car still moves. It's sitting at an auto shop waiting to get taken apart to see what I really messed up. My knocking got louder too, except I stopped driving it before it became any worse. Not to mention, I had little to no oil in my car, My post is on the main page of the recent topics, check it out. We have similar issues.
